새 집, 새 자동차, 사랑스러운 가족에, 국회의원 선거 당선까지 막힘 없이 술술 일이 풀리던 에반(스티브 카렐). 기분 좋을 때마다 추는 센스 제로의 댄스 실력과 살짝 소심한 것 빼고는 아무 문제 없던 그에게 이상한 일이 일어나기 시작한다. 매일 맞춰놓지도 않은 새벽 6시 14분에 알람이 울리고, 주문하지도 않은 목재와, 망치, 못과 같은 공구가 배달 되는 것. 실수려니 하고 넘어간 그 앞에 신(모건 프리먼)이 나타나 도시 한복판에 거대한 방주를 세우라는 미션을 내린다. 망치질 한번 해본 적 없는 에반은 코웃음 치며 이를 무시하는데… 하지만 수백 마리의 동물들이 쌍쌍이 모여 그의 뒤를 졸졸 따라 다니기 시작하고 그의 평화로웠던 삶은 방해 받기 시작해 일도 생활도 모두 엉망이 되어 버리고 만다. 결국 신에게 선택받은 에반은 가족과 동물들의 도움을 받아 방주를 제작하기 시작하는데… 과연 신이 내린 이 시련(?)을 에반은 잘 헤쳐나갈 수 있을까?

하느님이 혼돈으로부터 천지를 창조하시고, 최초의 인간 아담과 하와를 빚어내셨다. 하지만 아담과 하와는 뱀의 꼬임에 빠져 금단의 열매인 선악과를 따먹었기 때문에 에덴동산에서 쫓겨나게 되었다. 이들은 직접 땅을 일구어 고단하게 살면서 카인과 아벨이라는 두 아들을 낳아 키웠다. 그러나 형제인 아벨을 죽인 카인은 이마에 죄인의 표지를 받고 에덴의 동쪽으로 향해 그 곳에서 자손을 퍼뜨리고 살게 되었다. 노아는 하와의 또 다른 아들, 셋의 후손이었다. 하느님은 인간이 점점 포악한 일만 일삼는 것을 보고, 한탄하여 자신이 창조한 모든 세계를 물로 멸망시키려 하나, 노아의 가족들만 살려주기로 하고 그에게 방주를 지어 홍수를 면하게 한다.

Noah, a farmer and family man, is instructed by an angel to build an ark in the middle of a desert in order to save both his family and the faithful from a devastating flood. With incredible access to the park leading up to its opening, the filmmakers expose the larger system behind the creationist movement, piecing together the many factors that have led to the museum presenting its information as historical fact, and the people who are fighting to set the scientific record straight. Amid a climate of science denial and a well-funded corporate behemoth, three Kentuckians (a local geologist, an ex-creationist, and an atheist activist) try their best to challenge the movement that is taking over their home state. Meanwhile, fervent believers work diligently to create the lifelike animatronics that will be on display in the Ark.

Noah, his family (wife, 3 sons, their wives), and various animals all help build the ark. The rains come, and the skunks barely miss the boat (not that anyone was particularly looking for them), but they manage to swim to it. After the rain and many lamentations by the humans, the sun returns, to the great joy of all. The ground appears, and the animals (and many new babies) disembark.
