정부에서 주는 연금으로 최소한의 생활을 영위하며 살아가던 늙은 퇴직자 움베르토는 방세를 올려달라는 하숙집 여주인의 요구로 곤란을 겪는다. 친구라곤 하숙집 하녀 마리아와 유일한 동반자인 작은 개 플릭 뿐이었던 그는 정신적, 물질적 궁핍 속에서 점점 고독 속으로 빠져든다. 그가 어느 날 자선병원에서 돌아 왔을 때, 그의 벽은 공사장 인부들에 의해 허물어져있고, 그의 개도 보이지 않는다. 방세를 지불하지 못한 움베르토는 결국 쫓겨나고 마침내 자살을 기도하게 되는데...

에지 시(Edge City). 은행에서 단조로운 일상을 보내고 있던 평범한 은행원 스탠리. 어느날 그는 우연한 기회로 고대 시대의 유물인 마스크를 발견한다. 그런데 이 마스크는 아주 신비로운 힘을 가지고 있다. 스탠리가 마스크를 쓰면 초인적인 힘을 가진 불사신이 된다. 스탠리는 나이트클럽 가수인 티나를 사랑하지만 그녀는 악당 조직 보스의 정부다. 스탠리의 마스크 때문에 여러가지 소동이 일어나고 경찰은 스탠리를 뒤쫓는다. 티나가 보스를 사랑하지도 않으며 빠져나올 기회만을 노리고 있다는 것을 알고 그녀를 돕는다. 스탠리의 마스크 때문에 일어난 여러가지 소동으로 경찰은 그를 추적하고 엎친데 덮친격으로 조직까지 가세, 쫓고 쫓기는 사건이 벌어진다. 조직의 사주를 받은 어느 여기자에 의해 정체가 탄로난 스탠리는 조직에게 마스크를 빼앗기고 조직의 보스는 마스크를 이용하여 도시의 세력을 장악하려하는데…

영화는 복수심에 불타는 맥스 케이디(Max Cady: 로버트 드니로 분)가 강간 폭행죄로 14년형을 마치고 출소하면서부터 시작된다. 감옥에 있는 동안 글을 배우고 문학서에서 철학서 등을 독파, 스스로 변호할 수준까지 오른 맥스는 자신의 과거 공선변호사인 샘 보든(Sam Bowden: 닉 놀테 분)을 찾아간다. 샘은 14년전 케이디가 무죄를 선고 받을 수 있는 정보를 입수했지만 16세 소녀를 강간한 그에겐 자유를 누릴 권리가 없다고 판단, 검찰측에 제시하지 않았다. 이 사실을 알고 있는 맥스는 샘이 자신을 배신했다는 생각에 수감내내 복수심을 키워온 것. 처음 맥스의 위협을 받고 가볍게 생각했던 샘은 맥스가 평소 가까이 지내던 법원서기인 로리 데이비스에게 접근하여 그녀에게 무자비한 성폭행을 보고는 경악한다. 사립 탐정 커젝(Claude Kersek: 죠 돈 베이커 분)을 고용한 샘은 그일로 점차 자신의 가정까지 흔들리는 것을 느끼게 된다. 한편 맥스는 막 사춘기에 접어든 15살 난 샘의 딸 대니(Danielle Bowden: 줄리엣 루이스 분)가 한창 성격이 반항적이고 성적 호기심이 높은 것을 이용하여 헨리 밀러의 '섹서스'와 '북회귀선' 등을 이용하여 접근한다. 위기 의식을 느낀 나머지 샘은 청부업자를 고용하여 맥스를 습격하게 한다. 청부업자들은 파이프와 체인으로 맥스를 피투성이로 만들지만 불사신 같은 맥스는 이들을 때려 눕힌다. 이 사건은 맥스의 복수심을 더욱 자극하는 계기가 되고 맥스는 처절한 복수의 화신이 되어 샘을 괴롭힌다. 그의 최후 복수의 장소는 폭풍이 휘몰아치는 케이프 피어. 그곳에서 맥스와 샘의 마지막 대결은 빛도 소리도 없는 다만 공포로 변해간다.

부드러운 봄의 햇살을 받으며 태어난 지 얼마안되는 아기곰 두스는 엄마곰과 함께 나무뿌리에서 꿀둥지를 파내어 먹고 산다. 그러나 엄마곰이 갑자기 굴러떨어진 바위에 깔려 죽자 혼자가 된 두스는 여기 저기 떠돌아 다닌다. 엄마곰의 보호없이 혼자서 직면하는 세계는 보이는 것 전부가 놀라움의 연속이다. 신기한 개구리, 물고기, 냇물, 꽃, 나비 등. 어느날 두스는 두 사냥꾼의 총에 맞아 상처를 입은 큰 숫곰 바트를 만난다. 두스는 귀찮아하는 바트를 쫓아가 상처를 핥아준다. 이내 친구가 된 두스와 바트는 함께 사냥하여 먹이를 먹고 아기곰 두스는 조금씩 바트를 통해 자연의 섭리를 알아가게 된다. 그러나 사냥개를 데리고 다시 나타난 사냥꾼들은 바트를 쫓지만 두스는 생포된다. 두스를 구하기 위해 나타난 큰곰 바트에게 밀려 절벽에 몰린 사냥꾼들은 죽을 위기에 처하지만 바트는 사냥꾼을 해치지않고 살려준다. 우여곡절 끝에 바트의 곁에 돌아온 두스는 흰눈이 내리는 겨울이오자 바트와 함께 겨울잠을 위해 동굴을 찾는다.
