Set in tsarist Russia around the turn of the century and based on a true story of a Russian Jewish peasant Yakov Bog who was wrongly imprisoned for a most unlikely crime - the “ritual murder” of a Gentile child in Kiev. We witness the unrelenting detail of the peasant handyman's life in prison and see him gain in dignity as the efforts to humiliate him and make him confess fail.

세 명의 여자들이 여름 별장에서 같이 휴가를 보내면서 그녀들의 남편들이 돌아오기를 기다린다. 그녀들은 과거에 있었던 결혼 생활의 상처들을 회상하면서 서로를 위로하는데... 첫 번째 회상자 라켈은 성적으로 만족스럽지 못한 결혼 생활을 하던 중 그녀의 전 애인이었던 카이(얄 쿨레 분)와 야외 사우나에서 사랑을 나누다 남편에게 들켰던 일을 얘기한다. 골동품 수집가인 그녀의 남편이 감정적으로 움츠러든 상태에서 그 현장을 목격한 것이다. 그리고 그는 정원의 오두막으로 물러나서 자살할 것을 결심한다. 그러나 그의 형은 부인이 없는 것보다는 부정한 부인이라도 있는 것이 낫다면서 그의 자살 충동을 단념시킨다. 이 에피소드의 화자는 이상하게도 그녀의 남편이 어린 아이와 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 두 번째 에피소드는 마따 부인의 연애담이다. 그녀는 온 가족의 반대를 무릅쓰고 파리의 예술가와 결혼을 감행해서 아기를 낳은 이야기를 한다. 이 이야기에서는 생생한 출산 장면도 재현된다. 세 번째 에피소드는 코믹한 요소가 강한 이야기로 베리히만 감독의 단골 배우인 에바 달벡과 군나르 변스트란드가 감정적으로 소원해진 부부로 등장한다. 사이가 멀어져 있었던 이들 부부가 어느 날 엘리베이터에 갇힘으로써 그들의 사랑이 다시 불타게 된다.

This is a story about returning to ones ancestral homeland. Anna is a cardiologist who discovers her father has fled to his native Armenia after being diagnosed with a heart problem. Despite their contentious relationship, she sets out to bring her father back for this operation. Anna is a tough-minded, headstrong woman with little feeling for her fathers homeland or patience with its politics and socially intrusive culture, yet she finds this journey not only a reunion of sorts, but one of reconciliation as well.

쿠바 오리엔테 지방에서 태어난 레이날도 아레나스는 가난하지만 풍요로운 자연 속에서 자유를 만끽하며 성장해나간다. 십대시절, 카스트로 혁명군에 참가 할 만큼 성숙했던 아레나스는 스무 살 때 하바나 대학에 입학하여 자신의 문학적 재능을 키워나간다. 정치 혁명 초기, 국제 도시였던 하바나는 정치, 사회, 문화 그리고 성혁명까지 온갖 가능성을 내포한 물결이 넘쳐난다. 레이날도는 그곳에서 작가와 동성애자로서의 정체성을 찾기 위한 탐구의 나날을 보낸다. 그러나 혁명이 끝난 뒤, 레이날도의 삶은 고통으로 뒤바뀌게 된다. 1960년대 쿠바 정권의 예술가와 동성애자들에 대한 탄압정책 속에서도 글쓰기를 계속하던 레이날도는 성희롱 누명으로 기소되었다가 구치소를 빠져나오지만 결국 경찰에게 잡혀 '엘 모로' 감옥으로 보내진다. 레이날도는 2년간 편지대필을 하며 감옥 생활을 버텨나간다. 그는 틈틈이 옥중에서 쓴 소설을 밖으로 빼내는데 성공하지만 이후 그 사실이 밝혀져 심한 벌을 받는다. 결국 그는 작품과 목숨의 선택기로에서 작품을 포기하고 감옥에서 풀려난다. 1980년, 쿠바 정권은 동성애자, 정신병자, 범죄자들을 쿠바에서 추방하는 정책을 발표한다. 레이날도는 동성애자로서 쿠바를 탈출, 뉴욕에 정착하지만 가난과 에이즈라는 고통이 그에게 찾아온다. 그리고 그는 친구 라자로의 곁에서 마지막 선택을 한다.
