프랭크의 가족은 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸고 뉴욕 브루클린에 정착하지만 정작 그들을 반기는 건 익숙한 비참함 뿐이다. 프랭크의 아버지는 번번이 취직에 실패하고, 병든 동생은 치료비가 없어 숨을 거둔다. 결국 프랭크 가족은 다시 아일랜드로 돌아오지만 고향의 상황은 떠날 때 보다 더욱 나빠져 있었다.
