Police lieutenant detective Thomas 'Thom' Randall's steady girl-friend, Dr. Jennifer 'Jen' Allen, is Dr. Aaron Michaels's main assistant on his pharmaceutical firm Bellion's research program to cure the highly contagious, fatal infection Guinin. A convicted murderer, whom Thom arrested, is one of their special drug test subjects, but escapes. The convict and Jen are affected by radioactively altered DNA from an experimental reactor used on mosquitoes which transfer quinine. The convict soon mutates into a mosquito-like monster, which sucks its victims dry. By the time Thom and his junior murder brigade partner Charlie Morrison figure out what happens, Jen starts mutating herself.
어느 조용한 여름 밤, 중서부 숲속 늪지대에 외계에서 날아온 우주선이 추락한다. 숲속에 사는 수많은 모기떼들은 외계인의 시체에서 나오는 낯선 피를 향해 정신없이 달려드는데. 사고 현장으로부터 얼마 떨어지지 않은 곳에 위치한 관광비는 바로 주립 공원. 직원인 레인저 헨드릭스(Ranger Tony: 존 르네올드 분)는 모기떼를 쫓느라 바쁜 하루를 보내고 있다. 늘 인력 보충을 상부에 요청해온 그에게 오늘은 새로운 직원이 부임하는 날. 새 직장인 주립공원을 향해 달려가고 있는 인물은 메간(Megan: 레이첼 로이셀 분)이라는 20대 초반의 젊은 여성이다. 그녀는 남자친구 레이(Ray: 팀 러브레이스 분)와 함께 첫 출근을 위해 고속도로를 달리다 뭔가 거대한 생물체와 충돌을 한다. 차는 망가졌고 곤충처럼 생긴 거대한 생명체 또한 죽어버렸지만 그 정체는 알 수가 없다. 한편, 유성을 연구하기 위해 공군에게 파견된 과학자 파크 박사(Parks: 론 애쉬톤 분)는 사고로 발이 묶은 레이와 메간을 발견하고 이들을 공원까지 데려다주는데 이들이 도착하자 공원은 이미 대학살의 현장이다. 그곳에는 레인저 헨드릭스가 유일하게 생존해 있는데, 이들 네사람은 공포감에 사로잡힌 채 방금 주인을 잃은 듯한 이동버스 안으로 피신한다. 대학살의 주범은 다름 아닌 외계인의 피를 빨아먹고 거대하게 변한 모기떼. 이제 무사히 도시로 돌아가는 것만이 이들의 목표, 그러나 이들의 버스를 노리는 두 명의 강도가 나타나고 한바탕의 격투가 벌어진다. 강도들을 물리친 일행은 곧 닥쳐올 위험을 피해 출발하지만 만 배나 거대해진 살인모기떼가 이내 이들을 공격하기 시작한다. 이동버스는 망가지고, 강도 중 겨우 살아남은 얼과 합류한 일행은 가까스로 숲을 향해 달아난다. 숲속의 한 농가로 들어온 일행은 잠시 숨을 돌리지만 모기떼들은 곧 농가를 공격하기 시작한다.
