The Cathedral (Polish: Katedra) is a 2002 short animated science fiction movie by Tomasz Bagiński, based on a short story by Jacek Dukaj, winner of the Janusz A. Zajdel Award in 2000. The film was nominated in 2002 for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film for the 75th Academy Awards.

A hand-made, scratched-on film experiment in intermittent animation. The images are a group of twenty-four visuals, all non-representational, which arrange and rearrange on the screen in many combinations. The result is a changing pattern of sound and image that has its own rhythm for eye and ear.

The sky turns light blue, the ghosts' dance slows. Then black night returns bringing intimations of frenzy. Bones play snare drums; spooks peek out of square graves. Scary faces appear. Frenetic movement takes over. A rooster crows and all return to earth as the sun's light appears.

Likely in June 1897, a group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

A gardener is watering his flowers, when a mischievous boy sneaks up behind his back, and puts a foot on the water hose. The gardener is surprised and looks into the nozzle to find out why the water has stopped coming. The boy then lifts his foot from the hose, whereby the water squirts up in the gardener's face. The gardener chases the boy, grips his ear and slaps him in his buttocks. The boy then runs away and the gardener continues his watering. Three separate versions of this film exist, this is the original, filmed by Louis Lumière.

남북전쟁이 끝난 후 남아도는 대포를 처리하는 방법을 연구하다가 큰 대포를 만들어 안에다가 사람을 태운 우주선을 집어 넣고 달로 쏘아 올리기로 결정한다. 사람들에게 환송을 받으며 천문학자를 태운 로켓이 대포로 발사되고 곧 로켓은 달에 착륙한다. 천문학자는 달에 도착하자마자 잠을 자고, 일어나고 나서 동굴로 가자 거대한 버섯을 발견한다. 한 천문학자가 우산을 펼치자 곧바로 버섯으로 변해 버린다. 이때 외계인이 나타나지만 천문학자는 이를 쉽게 죽인다. 곧 더 많은 외계인이 나타나서 천문학자들은 둘러싸이게 되고, 외계인은 그들을 잡아 우두머리에게 데리고 간다. 천문학자들이 우두머리를 죽이고 도망친다. 다섯 명이 비행선 안으로 들어가고 나머지 한 명은 절벽에 걸친 비행선에 달린 로프에 매달려 비행선을 우주로 떨어뜨린다. 우주선은 지구로 떨어져 바다에 빠진다. 천문학자들은 구조되어 큰 환대를 받는다.

Le Manoir du diable or The House of the Devil, released in the United States as The Haunted Castle and in Britain as The Devil's Castle, is an 1896 French short silent film directed by Georges Méliès. The film tells the story of an encounter with the Devil and various attendant phantoms. It is intended to evoke amusement and wonder from its audiences, rather than fear. However, because of its themes and characters, it has been considered to technically be the first horror film, as well as potentially the first vampire film. The film opens with a large bat flying into a medieval castle, circling a room, and then suddenly changing into the Devil. Producing a cauldron, Mephistopheles conjures up a young girl and various supernatural creatures in an effort to scare two cavaliers, eventually succeeding in causing one to flee. Ultimately the remaining cavalier is confronted face-to-face by the Devil before reaching for and brandishing a large crucifix, which causes the Devil to vanish.

전문 도박사, 신시내티 키드(스티브 맥퀸 분)는 시시한 도박판에 염증을 느끼며 하루하루 무료한 생활을 하고 있다. 때마침 당대 최고의 도박사, 랜시 하워드(에드워드 G. 로빈슨 분)가 게임을 하기 위해 뉴올리언스에 오자 그에게 도전장을 내민다. 뉴올리언스 출신의 또 다른 전문 도박사, 슈터는 딜러를 자청하며 신시내티 키드와 랜시 하워드의 게임을 주선한다. 하지만 랜시 하워드의 오랜 숙적인 슬레이드의 계략에 휘말려 승부를 조작하기로 마음먹는다. 마침내 한 호텔방에서 도박판이 벌어지고 한창 게임을 하던 신시내티 키드는 슈터의 행동에서 뭔가 수상쩍음을 눈치 챈다. 그리고 그를 닦달해서 슬레이드가 부정한 방법으로 자신에게 유리한 게임이 되도록 만들고 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 공정한 방법으로 당당하게 전설적인 도박사를 누르고 싶었던 신시내티 시티는 슬레이드의 제안을 뿌리치고 소신껏 행동한다. 몇 시간의 휴식 후 다시 게임이 시작되고 엄청난 판돈이 오간다. 최종 베팅의 순간... 두 도박 고수의 게임을 지켜보고 있던 사람들은 모두 신시내티가 이길 것이라고 예상한다. 하지만 사람들의 예상과는 달리 행운의 여신은 랜시 하워드의 손을 들어준다. 패배를 인정하고 허탈한 마음으로 호텔을 나온 신시내티 키드는 항상 자신을 따라다니며 동전 던지기를 조르는 구두닦이 소년을 만난다. 소년의 부탁대로 동전 던지기 게임을 하지만 스스로 최고의 도박사임을 자부하던 신시내티 키드는 이번에도 지고 만다.

노르망디 해안의 어느 휴양지로 일단의 사람들이 휴가를 위해 몰려오고 영화의 끝에서 그들은 다시 원래 왔던 곳으로 돌아간다. 자끄 타티 감독의 영화에 등장하는 대중적인 캐릭터 윌로씨가 처음 등장하는 영화. 휴가철이 되자 브르타뉴 해변에는 휴양객들이 몰려든다. 그런데 그들의 휴가는 왠지 권태로워 보인다. 어느 날 그 곳에 신사적이고 점잖은 듯 보이는 윌로씨가 도착하며 소동이 일어난다. 영화는 일관된 이야기가 이어지기보다는 그저 휴가에 따라 벌어지는 소동을 보여준다. 윌로씨라는 인물이 황당한 행동을 하는 장면과 그가 벌인 일을 당한 휴양객들이 어리둥절해 하는 에피소드로 나뉜다. 사람들에게 잘 하려고 하지만 늘 사고를 일으키는 윌로씨는 그 곳의 천덕꾸러미 신세가 되고 만다. 그는 늘 한 발짝 늦는 바람에 세상과 조화되지 못하고 늘 겉도는 인생이다. 그리고 세상은 그런 그를 배려하지 않는다. 슬랩스틱 코미디의 대중적인 호소력과 모더니즘적 실험을 융합한 영화들을 만들며 작가의 위치에 올라선 감독 자크 타티는 윌로씨라는 캐릭터를 만들어 내며 그 후 수 편의 영화를 만들었다(이 엉뚱하기 그지없는 아저씨 윌로씨를 연기하는 이는 자크 타티 감독 본인이다). 훗날 트뤼포는 '드와넬' 시리즈 중 한 편에서 윌로씨를 카메오 등장시키기도 했다.

인상파 화가 르노와르의 아들인 장 르노와르의 야유와 풍자가 난무하는 클래식 필름. 프랑스 지배계층에 대한 부도덕한 묘사로 인해 1959년에야 검열 삭제 부분이 복원, 완성된 영화로 공개되는 비운을 겪기도 했다. 영화가 표현할 수 있는 미장센의 모든 것을 담고 있는 작품이라 추앙받기도 하는 이 작품은 갖가지 계층의 프랑스인들이 모인 대저택에서 벌어지는 며칠간의 에피소드를 줄거리로 하고 있다. 하지만 줄거리 보다도 내러티브, 즉흥연기, 딥 포커스, 카메라 무브먼트, 모짜르트 음악 등이 영화의 풍부함을 더해준다. 감독 스스로가 이야기하는 이 영화의 주제는 '인생은 멈추어 있지 않고 항상 흐른다'라는 것.

여행 중이던 데이비드 그레이는 어느 여인숙에 머물게 된다. 여인숙 집안의 딸이 쇠약해져 있는 모습을 본 그는 집안의 불길한 기운에 불안을 느낀다. 경찰의 그림자는 그에게서 멀어져가고 배가 오기를 기다리던 농부는 돌연 낫을 휘두르는 죽음의 신이 된다. 이러한 악몽 같은 일들을 겪은 후 그레이는 그 여인숙을 운영하는 늙은 여자가 고대의 뱀파이어이며 자신이 위험에 처해있다는 것을 깨닫는다. 칼 테오도르 드레이어 최초의 유성 영화로 촬영을 맡은 루돌프 마테의 꿈인지 현실인지 불확실한 몽롱한 영상이 공포를 더욱 가중시킨다.

The earliest surviving celluloid film, and believed second moving picture ever created, was shot by Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince using the LPCCP Type-1 MkII single-lens camera. It was taken in the garden of Oakwood Grange, the Whitley family house in Roundhay, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire (UK), possibly on 14 October 1888. It shows Adolphe Le Prince (Le Prince's son), Mrs. Sarah Whitley (Le Prince's mother-in-law), Joseph Whitley and Miss Harriet Hartley walking around in circles, laughing to themselves and keeping within the area framed by the camera. The Roundhay Garden Scene was recorded at 12 frames per second and runs for 2.11 seconds.

Sallie Gardner at a Gallop was one of the earliest silent films — a production experiment by the photographer Eadward Muybridge on June 15, 1878 that led to the development of motion pictures. The motion picture consists of 24 photographs in a fast-motion series that were shown on a zoopraxiscope.
