시놉시스
백인 식민주의의 유산을 통렬한 시선으로 바라보는 거장의 최신작. 광산으로 일확천금을 얻고자 말레이시아 여자와 결혼했던 가스파르는 꿈이 좌절된 후 정신적, 육체적으로 황폐한 삶을 산다. 유럽에 대한 향수와 유색인에 대한 경멸로 딸 니나에게 서구식 교육을 받게 하나 피부색이 다른 니나는 백인이 되지 못한다.
19세기 베트남, 14세 소녀 마이는 아름다운 계곡을 따라 꽃단장한 배를 타고 간다. 그녀를 기다리는 것은 나이가 훨씬 많은 지주의 셋째 부인이 되는 것. 홍등이 밝혀지고 무사히 첫날밤을 치른다. 눈치가 빠른 마이는 다른 부인들과도 잘 지내고 둘째 부인의 딸과도 자매처럼 지낸다. 성에 눈을 뜨면서 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 성인이 되어가는 한편, 빨리 아들을 낳아 자신의 지위를 인정받고자 한다. 머지않아 순조롭게 임신을 하고 태교를 하던 중, 중매결혼을 앞둔 장성한 첫째 부인의 아들과 친언니처럼 살갑게 지내는 둘째 부인이 서로 연인관계라는 사실을 알게 된다. 마이 자신도 둘째 부인에게 연정을 느끼게 되는데…. 몸종 간에도 허락 없이 임신을 하면 처벌을 받는 시대를 배경으로 성장과 금기, 자유와 극단의 선택에 이르게 한 다층적인 감정을 아름답게 표현하였다. 단순히 오리엔탈 에로티시즘으로 보게 된다면 이 영화가 드러내고자 하는 여성의 성장이라는 오늘날에도 살아있는 메시지를 놓치는 일이 될 것이다.
