Girls of the Road (1940)

A man who has a body almost completely covered in tattoos is searching for the woman who cursed him with the "skin illustrations". Each tattoo reveals a bizarre story, which is experienced by staring at the scene depicted. When the illustrated man meets a fellow tramp on the road a strange voyage begins.

산업의 기계화와 대공황이 맞물려 힘든 시절, 공장의 컨베이어 벨트 위에서 하루 종일 나사못 조이는 일을 하는 찰리. 찰리는 반복되는 작업에 착란 현상을 일으키고, 눈에 보이는 모든 것을 조여버리는 강박 관념에 빠지고 만다. 그는 급기야 정신 병원에 가게 되고, 거리를 방황하다 시위 군중에 휩쓸려 감옥살이까지 하게 된다. 몇 년 후 감옥에서 풀려난 찰리는 부모를 잃고 고아가 된 한소녀를 만난다. 그녀의 도움으로 카페에서 일하게 되고 서로를 의지하며 새로운 희망을 가진다. 둘은 행복하고 단란한 가정을 꿈꾸며 일자리를 찾아 헤매지만 매번 다시 거리로 내몰리고 마는데...

영화 에는 ‘비참한 생활'이란 의미가 담겨있다. 이 영화에서 찰리가 들개 스크랩을 버리지 않고 보살피는 까닭은 그 개를 통해 자기 자신을 보기 때문일 것이다. 길거리에서 잠을 자는 떠돌이 생활은 채플린 자신의 체험에서 온 것이기도 하며 당시 사회모습의 반영이기도 하다. 가난한 찰리는 공터에서 살고 있다. 일자리를 구하려고 애쓰지만 번번히 실패하는 찰리. 실의에 빠져 돌아오던 찰리는 다른 떠돌이 개들한테 공격을 받던 암캐 스크랩을 구해주고 집으로 데려온다. 스크랩의 도움으로 소시지를 훔치는 데 성공한 찰리는 댄스홀에 가지만 돈이 없어서 쫓겨나고 만다. 그런데 스크랩이 땅에 묻힌 지갑을 우연히 파내자, 찰리는 그 안에 든 돈으로 댄스홀에 간다.

찰리 채플린은 이 작품에서 골프장에 몰래 들어온 떠돌이 부랑자와 골프를 치고 있는 부유한 신사의 두 가지 역할을 맡고 있다. 골프장에 몰래 들어온 부랑자(찰리)는 술 취한 남편(찰리)과 말다툼을 하고 있는 한 부유한 여인을 만나게 된다. 그녀가 이 부랑자를 그녀의 남편과 혼동하면서 사건이 벌어진다.

월남전에서 제대한 그린베레 출신의 존 람보(John Rambo: 실베스타 스탤론 분)는, 전우를 찾아 록키 산맥의 어느 한적한 시골 마을에 도착한다. 하지만 그가 찾고자 하는 이는 이미 암으로 세상을 떠난 뒤였다. 마을 보안관 셔리프 윌 티즐(Sheriff Will Teasle: 브라이언 데니히 분)는 그의 부랑자 행색에 반감을 갖고 마을에서 쫓아내려한다. 하지만 람보가 순순히 응하지 않자 억지 죄목으로 체포하는데, 조사를 하는 과정에서 그 옛날 월맹 포로 수용소에서 받은 고문 기억이 악몽처럼 되살아나자, 람보는 갑자기 미친 사람처럼 광폭해져 경찰관과 경찰서를 때려 부수고 탈출한다. 경찰의 추적을 따돌리고 마을 산 속으로 숨어든 람보는 월남전에서 몸에 익힌 게릴라 전술로 경찰과 대치한다. 그러다 경찰 헬기를 피하고자 절벽에서 뛰어내려 결국 큰 부상을 입는다. 이때 저격의 위험 때문에 그가 던진 돌이 헬기 유리창을 맞추고 이틈에 경찰관 하트가 헬기에서 떨어져 죽는다. 위험에서 벗어난 람보는 피가 흐르는 팔을 바늘로 꿰맨다. 동료마저 잃은 경찰은 람보를 잡는데 혈안이 되어 사냥개를 이끌고 숲으로 추적해 오지만 결국 람보의 교묘한 전술로 모두 부상을 입고 물러난다. 사태가 커지자 지방 경찰 기동대와 주경비대대의 지원을 받아 주변의 모든 길이 통제되고, 이 일은 신문과 방송 등 메스컴의 집중을 받는데...

In 1928, as the talkies threw the film industry and film language into turmoil, Chaplin decided that his Tramp character would not be heard. City Lights would not be a talking picture, but it would have a soundtrack. Chaplin personally composed a musical score and sound effects for the picture. With Peter Lord, the famous co-creator of Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit, we see how Chaplin became the king of slapstick comedy and the superstar of the movies.
