This short documentary, presented and directed by MGM sound engineer Douglas Shearer, goes behind the scenes to look at how the sound portion of a talking picture is created.

This short promotes the premise that movies often create a demand for the fashions seen in them. It starts with a vignette in rural America. A mother and daughter go to town to buy a new dress. In the dress shop window is a designer dress worn by Joan Crawford in a recent movie. This short follows the early career of actress Jane Barnes. She starts by doing extra work. After several months she is offered a studio contract (the "first step"). However, her work consists mostly of fashion shoots and bit parts that end up on the cutting room floor. She is even used as a stand-in for Maureen O'Sullivan on the set of a Tarzan movie when camera angles and lighting must be set up.

In the office of Mr. Lee, a talent agent, Zeppo bursts through the door, proclaiming to be a great musical actor. He gives a terrible impression of Maurice Chevallier. Chico arrives, also proclaiming to be a great musical talent, and gives an even worse impression of the same musical act. This is followed by Groucho and finally Harpo, all adding to the growing confusion in the office.

유람선에 밀항한 4명의 친구들은 선원들을 피해 화물칸의 나무 상자에 숨어 지내지만 곧 선원들은 그들이 밀항하고 있다는 사실을 알고 대대적인 수색에 나선다. 하지만 재치있게 잘 숨어있던 이들은 물건을 하역하기 위해 나무 상자를 들어 올리면서 결국 선원들에게 발각되고 만다. 결국 그들은 넓은 배 안의 이곳 저곳으로 숨어 다니며 선원들과 숨바꼭질을 시작한다. 선장실과, 어린이 연극 무대, 배 위의 갑판으로 도망다니던 4명의 친구들은 결국 2명씩 나뉘어 선원들을 피해 다니기 시작한다. 그러던 중 우연히 유람선에 타고 있던 대립 관계에 있던 사업가을 만나게 되고 결국 2명씩 나뉜 그들은 대립 관계에 있는 거물들을 서로 경호하며 상대방을 없애 버리기를 강요 받게 된다.

The House That Shadows Built (1931) is a short feature, roughly 48 minutes long, from Paramount Pictures made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the studio's founding in 1912. It was a promotional film for exhibitors and never had a regular theatrical release and includes a brief history of Paramount, interviews with various actors, and clips from upcoming projects (some of which never came to fruition). The title comes from a biography of Paramount founder Adolph Zukor, The House That Shadows Built (1928), by William Henry Irwin.

‘스펄딩’이라는 인물은 TV 프로그램에서도 등장했던 캐릭터로 잠시의 쉴 틈도 없이 움직이며 동시에 입을 놀림으로써 황당하면서도 통쾌한 웃음을 선사한다. 어느 날 리튼하우스 부인의 대저택에서 화려한 파티가 개최된다. 이 파티에는 탐험가 대장 지오프리티 스펄딩이 참가하며 또한 부유한 예술후원가 로스코 W. 챈들러가 보가드의 유명한 그림 ‘사냥후’를 파티장에 전시한다고 하여 더욱 화제가 되고 있다. 곧 파티가 시작되고 많은 사람들이 모여들면서 파티장은 소란스러워진다. 한편 이 곳에 온 그레이스와 존은 서로 사랑하는 사이이지만 아직 알려지지 않은 화가인 존의 경제능력이 없어 결혼을 하지 못하고 있는 상태이다. 그들은 존을 세상에 알리기 위해 존이 베낀 보가드의 ‘사냥후’를 몰래 진품과 바꿔치기 하기로 한다. 수많은 소동 끝에 그림을 바꿔치기 하지만 사람들은 곧 이를 알아차린다. 오랜 범인 색출 작업 끝에 경찰이 출동하기에 이르고 결국 사람들은 존과 그레이스가 한 짓이라는 것을 알아낸다. 하지만 사람들의 요청에 의해 경찰은 범인들을 너그러이 용서하고 존은 그의 그림 실력을 인정받기에 이른다. 과 함께 막스 형제가 브로드웨이에서 활동할 당시 인기를 끌었던 뮤지컬을 영화화한 작품. 영화는 아프리카 탐험가인 제프린 스펄딩을 주축으로 부유한 리튼하우스 부인의 저택에 초대받은 손님들과 사라진 그림을 둘러싼 좌충우돌을 유쾌하게 그렸다. 파라마운트사에서 제작한 막스 형제의 두 번째 작품이자 뉴욕 퀸즈의 파라마운트 아스토리아 스튜디오에서 촬영한 마지막 작품이기도 한다. 아스토리아 스튜디오의 일부는 현재 미국영상박물관(The American Museum of the Moving Image)로 사용되고 있다. 막스 브라더스의 첫 장편영화. 영화는 플로리다에서 호텔을 경영하는 미스터 해머(그루초 막스)가 경영난에 직면하자 이를 타계하기 위한 계략을 꾸미는 과정을 마치 뮤지컬을 보듯 흥겨운 노래와 춤으로 보여준다. 영화로 만들어지기 이전 이미 동명의 뮤지컬 작품을 약 18개월 동안 상연하며 인기를 누렸고, 브로드웨이 입성 후 큰 성공을 거두었다. 초기 유성영화 작품 중 하나인 이 작품은 자세히 보면 당시 열악한 제작 환경을 엿볼 수 있다. 미스터 해머가 플로리다 부동산 지도를 보여 주는 장면에서 사운드를 녹음하는 음향 장비의 과도한 작동을 막기 위해 지도를 일부러 물에 적셔 둔 장면이 눈에 띈다. 막스 형제의 작품은 훗날 많은 영화 작품과 문화계에 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 테리 길리엄은 자신의 영화에 막스 형제의 작품을 여러 차례 인용했는데, 에서는 온 가족이 을 보는 장면을 삽입해 눈길을 끌었다. Harpo played the hero, a detective named Watson who "made his entrance in a high hat, sliding down a coal chute into the basement". Groucho played an "old movie" villain, who "sported a long moustache and was clad in black", while Chico was probably his "chuckling [Italian] henchman". Zeppo portrayed a playboy who was the owner of a nightclub in which most of the action took place, including "a cabaret, [which allowed] the inclusion of a dance number". The final shot showed Groucho "in ball and chain, trudging slowly off into the gloaming". Harpo, in a rare moment of romantic glory, gets the girl in the end.
