고랭과 고다르의 본격적인 공동작업이 시작된 작품. 서부영화의 장르적 관습을 모델로 하여 전통적인 부르주아 영화의 테크닉과 내용을 조직적으로 해체하면서 그 뒤에 숨어 있는 억압적인 이데올로기를 노출시키는 영화. 이미지와 사운드의 관계에 대한 정치적 질문이 몽타주의 전통적 개념을 전복시키는 형식 실험과 동일하게 진행된다.
