A priest (Robert Ginty) learns that he fathered a child during his tour of duty in Vietnam and that the mother and child has relocated to Houston, Texas in the Little Saigon quarters. 정신병 치료를 끝낸 제시카는 남편 던컨과 친구 우디와 전원생활을 꿈꾸며 시골로 오게 된다. 하지만 그녀가 살게 될 집은 아비가일 비숍이라는 여인이 빠져 죽었던 강 위에 세워진 집이며 마을 사람들은 비숍이 뱀파이어가 되어 아직도 나타난다는 둥의 소문을 믿으며 새로 이사 온 그들에게 적대적인 시선을 보낸다. 한편 제시카의 집에는 가출소녀가 기거하고 있었는데 제시카의 무리가 이 소녀를 받아들이면서 그들 사이에 애증이 섞인 묘한 관계가 형성되기 시작한다. 제시카의 시점으로 진행되는 Let's scare Jessica to death는 시종일관 모호하다. 그녀는 환청과 환각 증세를 보였던 과거의 병력으로 인해 그녀가 지금보고/듣는 것이 사실인지 아닌지 판단할 여력이 없다. 그래서 그녀는 그녀가 보고 있는 것을 환각이라고 단정해 버리고 다른 사람에게 그 사실을 숨긴다. 이렇게 그녀만의 세계라고 판단한 순간 다른 인물도 그녀가 환각이라고 생각한 인물을 보게 된다. 결국 환각은 현실인 것?이라고 생각하기에는 영화는 이런 상황을 싱거울 정도로 가볍게 넘겨버린다. 그 와중에 제시카만 안절부절 했다가 안심하는 상황이 반복된다. 그래서 이 영화는 독특한 긴장감을 획득한다. 이 영화가 정말로 시골에 요양온 부부와 친구가 그 지방의 귀신 혹은 뱀파이어에게 죽임을 당한다는 이야기 일수도 있고, 만우절이라는 영화처럼 친구와 남편이 짜고 그녀를 죽이려는 연극이었을 수도 있다. (이런 시나리오가 제목과 가장 어울린다) 하지만 결국 이 영화는 죽은 자들이 죽음을 인지하지 못한 채 겪는 저 세상의 이야기가 아닐까라고 나는 생각한다. 그들이 타고 다니는 차는 영구차이고 그녀가 이 마을에 들어서면서 제일 처음 들른 곳은 마을의 공동묘지이다. 그리고 그녀는 묘비를 본떠서 그녀의 방에 장식해 둔다. 게다가 마을의 사람들도 이미 처음부터 모두 죽어버린 사람들이었다. 이러거나 저러거나 영화는 이 모든 것을 맞다고도 틀리다고도 할 수 있을 정도로 모호하고 그 모호한 깊이만큼이나 기괴하고 재미있다.
