A man leaves everything behind to travel aimlessly through France, letting himself be guided only by the people and landscapes he encounters: four days and four nights of wandering, during which his lover tries to locate him via Grindr, a smartphone dating app.

More than 40 years after making "Cléo de 5 à 7," Agnes Varda invites her star, two other cast members, and her assistant directors to look back. She takes us through the film, from opening scene to the end, visiting its Paris locales, placing her aged actors in the same spots, telling stories, and listening to others' reflections on the making of the film. She and they talk about making a film on a low budget, its showing at Cannes, and trying to fix a problem in the last shot. Her assistant directors discuss casting, costumes, sets, and the ways the film changed their approaches to filmmaking.

Paula flees to Dunkirk to spend the end year celebrations. She is going to turn 50. She wanders around the city where she used to live, searching "men from her past".

'파리에서 만들어진 가장 아름다운 영화'라는 평가를 받았던 이 영화는 감독인 아녜스 바르다에게 최초로 국제적인 명성을 가져다주었다. 클레오의 모든 행동과 사건들은 실제로 물리적 시간의 흐름에 따라 묘사됨으로써 그녀가 죽음에 대한 두려움에 사로잡혀 있는 모습과 그 두려움을 벗어나게 되는 과정이 동시적으로 포착된다. 영화 속에서 점차로 그녀는 자기 자신은 물론이고 죽음과 삶에 대한 새로운 시선과 통찰을 향해 나아가기 때문이다. 바르다는 이 작품에서 관습적인 이야기 전개 대신에 사진적인 것과 영화적인 것의 특성을 최대한 활용하고 있는데, 미와 추는 조우하고 그로테스크함(살아있는 개구리를 먹는 남자)과 사랑스러움(클레오의 공적 이미지)은 병치되며, 빛과 어둠, 인공적인 것과 자연적인 것은 시각적 대조를 이루고, 밝은 뮤지컬 코미디와 비극적 드라마가 서로 엮어 들어감으로써 영화는 전반적으로 대립을 통해서 미묘한 결을 구성해간다.

스트립 댄서 안젤라는 사랑하는 에밀의 아이를 갖고 싶어 한다. 하지만 에밀은 준비되지 않았다며 거절한다. 에밀의 친구 알프레드는 아이 문제로 계속 에밀과 싸우는 안젤라에게 에밀의 사랑을 믿으라면서도 은근히 그녀를 유혹한다. 계속된 싸움에 지친 안젤라는 알프레드의 제안을 받아들이기로 한다.

프랑스 낭트의 항구, 카바레 댄서인 롤라는 7년 전에 떠난 연인 미셸을 기다리며 아들 이본을 키우고 있다. 그녀는 어린 시절 친구인 롤랑과 미국인 해병 프랭키의 구애를 받지만 미셸에 대한 변함없는 사랑으로 그들을 거부한다.

바르다가 실제로 자신의 첫째 딸을 임신하고 있을 때 만들어진 것으로서 그녀는 파리의 ‘라 무페’ 거리를 매일 방문하여 그때 그때 찍은 자료들을 통해서 영화를 구성해 나간다. ‘연인들’, ‘술취함’, ‘휴일’, ‘노인’, ‘열망’과 같은 단위들로 나누어진 영화는 은유적인 이미지나 부조리한 상징들을 통해서 삶의 과정 자체와 일상적 행위들의 부조리성에 대한 다양한 성찰을 담아 낸다. 그 결과 새 생명의 탄생에 대한 기대감에 차 있던 여성이 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 희망없는 일상과, 삶이 단지 가난함과 나이 들어 감에 불과하다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 르누아르가 자신의 후기작 중에서 가장 아끼는 작품. 물렝 루즈의 설립자 앙리 지들러의 삶을 바탕으로 뮤직홀에 대한 경배를 바치고 있는 작품. 장 가뱅이 물렝 루즈의 지배인 당글라드 역을 맡아 오랜만에 르누아르와 함께 작업했고, 멕시코 출신의 마리아 펠릭스와 가냘픈 매력의 프랑수아즈 아르눌이 연적으로 등장한다. 전설적인 가수 에디트 피아프와 파타슈의 카메오 출연도 영화를 보는 즐거움을 더해준다. 마치 툴루즈 로트렉의 판화를 보는 듯한 선명하고 아름다운 색채 역시 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 매력이다. 사랑의 진실성과 예술의 문제를 다룬다는 점에서 "황금마차"와 비교할 만한 영화.
