곤충학자 멜(Mel Coplin: 벤 스틸러 분)은 5개월된 아들과 아름다운 부인 낸시(Nancy Coplin: 패트리샤 아퀘트 분)와 함께 뉴욕에서 살고있는 중산층 가장이다. 입양아로 자라 늘 자신의 정체성 문제로 고민하던 멜은 아들이 태어나자 자신의 친부모를 찾기로 결심한다. 그러던 어느날 입양센터 직원 티나(Tina: 티아 레오니 분)로부터 친어머니의 소재를 확인했다는 연락을 받은 멜은 부인과 아들 그리고 티나와 함께 친어머니로 알려진 발레리를 만나기 위해 샌디에고로 간다. 발레리는 멜을 따뜻하게 맞이하지만 곧 친어머니가 아님이 밝혀진다. 그들 일행은 친아버지 프리츠(Fritz Boudreau: 데이빗 패트릭 켈리 분)가 살고 있다는 미시건으로 향한다. 춥고 어두운 도시에서 멜은 트럭 운전사로 일하고 있는 프리츠를 만난다. 프리츠의 지시에 따라 트럭 운전을 배우던 멜은 그로부터 자신은 친아버지가 아니라는 얘기를 듣고 깜짝 놀라 우체국 건물을 들이받고 만다. 그때 나타난 연방수사관인 폴(Paul: 리차드 젠킨스 분)과 토니(Tony: 조쉬 브로린 분)라는 게이 커플에게 걸려 경찰서까지 갔다가 낸시의 고교 동창생인 토니의 도움으로 풀려난 멜은 프리츠로부터 확인한 친부모님을 찾아서 뉴멕시코의 앤텔로프 스프링스라는 곳으로 떠나기로 한다. 좌충우돌 여정 중 찾아 온 사랑 다음 날 아침, 여장을 차린 멜 일행에게 토니 커플이 휴가 차 같이 가겠다며 따라온다. 양성애자인 토니는 낸시에게 관심을 갖고 있었고, 이혼 수속 중인 티나와 멜의 사이에도 이상기류가 흐르던 터여서 다섯 명의 여행은 묘하게 얽혀든다. 꿈에 그리던 부모님과의 상봉, 그런데. 뉴 멕시코에 도착한 멜은 친부모님인 쉴릭팅 부부를 만난다. 멜은 부모님으로부터 환각제를 제조했다가 감옥에 갇혔기 때문에 멜을 입양시켰다는 얘기를 듣는다. 한편 폴은 쉴릭팅 부부와 아들 로니가 약물을 제조하는 것을 알고는 세사람을 체포하겠다고 말한다. 이에 폴을 기절시킨 다음 그를 숲에 버리고 제조하던 마약을 멜이 렌트해온 차에
