No relation to the 1950 Frank Capra film of the same name, the 1943 Technicolor musical Riding High is a by-the-numbers vehicle for Dorothy Lamour and Dick Powell. Lamour stars as Ann Castle, a former burlesque queen who heads westward to claim her father's silver mine. Powell plays mining engineer Steve Baird, who like Ann has a vested interest in the worked-out mine. With the help of genial counterfeiter Mortimer J. Slocum (Victor Moore), Steve and Ann are able to peddle mining stock, thus saving her from bankruptcy. The stockholders are in a lynching mood when it appears that they've been flim-flammed, but a last minute "miracle" saves the day. Featured in the cast are Paramount stalwarts Cass Daley and Gil Lamb, the former doing her quasi-Martha Raye act and the latter swallowing his harmonica for the millionth time. Production values are excellent and the songs are exuberantly performed; it's only in its hackneyed plot that Riding High slows to a clip-clop.

For those, if any, who have wondered why so many Paramount contractees appeared in United Artists' films during the war years, this is another one of the Paramount productions that was sold to United Artists in the early-40's when U.A. was having trouble meeting their exhibitor contracts because of lack of product, mainly due to their loss of production in England. A group of starving, but young and willing, actors band together to share finances and an apartment. Norman Reese (William Holden) orders no love nonsense between the boys and girls till they are set on broadway, but Marge Benson (Barbara Britton) and Tony Dennison (James Beown) are already secretly married. A friend drops in to see Dottie Coburn (Martha O'Driscoll) and is shocked to find the boys and girls sharing the same apartment and insists it is her duty to inform Dottie's father (Jay Fassett.)

In his last film assignment, portly Walter Connolly fills the title role (in more ways than one) in The Great Victor Herbert. Very little of Herbert's life story is incorporated in the screenplay (a closing title actually apologizes for the film's paucity of cold hard facts); instead, the writers allow the famed composer's works to speak for themselves. In the tradition of one of his own operettas, Herbert spends most of his time patching up the shaky marriage between tenor John Ramsey (Allan Jones) and Louise Hall (Mary Martin). Many of Herbert's most famous compositions are well in evidence, including "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life", "March of the Toys" and "Kiss Me Again", the latter performed con brio by teenaged coloratura Susanna Foster. Evidently, the producers were able to secure the film rights for the Herbert songs, but not for the stage productions in which they appeared, which may explain such bizarre interpolations as having a song from Naughty Marietta.

Bill Burnett, a resident of Bali, visits New York City, meets and falls in love with Gail Allen, the successful manager of a Fifth Avenue shop, who is determined to remain free and independent. Bill proposes, Gail declines and Bill goes home to Bali. But a young girl, Rosie, and Tony the Window Cleaner, who dispels advice on every floor, soon have Gail thinking maybe she was a bit hasty with her no to Bill's proposal. Ere long she discovers that she does love Bill and can't live without him. She goes down to Bali to give him the good news. He learns that he is soon to marry Noel Van Ness. She goes back to New York City.

Patricia joins his troupe as a lark, and her father, James Harper, also pretends he is broke. Through some chicanery, Buck gets jobs for the girls as models at the Palace of Feminine Arts at the Paris International Exposition. James Harper borrows the priceless Napoleaon necklace to have a copy made for his daughter, but Buck thinks he stole it.

Of the singing Beebe brothers, young Mike just wants to be a kid; responsible Dave wants to work in his garage and marry Martha; but feckless Joe thinks his only road to success is through swapping and gambling. It seems the only thing all three can join in is their singing act, which Mike and Dave hate. Finally, all Joe's hopes are pinned on a race horse he's acquired swapping, but it's a bigger gamble than his family knows.

Disillusioned, he leaves, goes back to his old gang and plans to rob the department store.

First Gillette buys a rival newspaper, the Sentinel , and offers a pricey editorship to World newsman Ralph Houston, who refuses the offer on principle. That evening, Ralph and his partner, Tod Swain, are greeted at home by a creditor, and Vina Swain, Ralph's fiancée, is furious to find out he turned down Gillette's offer. When she learns Ralph went into debt to put her through college, she warns Gillette of a police raid and pays back Ralph's debt with Gillette's renumeration. When Ralph orders Vina not to work for Gillette, she breaks their engagement.

Bill thinks Jack is offering to let him see the show from an unusual viewpoint after he forgot to get him tickets for the performance, but then they find the corpse of a murdered woman and Bill immediately suspects Eric of the crime.

After years of questioning why people fear him, Death takes on human form so he can mingle among the mortals and find an answer. However, events soon spiral out of control as he falls in love with the beautiful young Grazia, the only woman not afraid of him. As he falls in love with her, her father sees him for what he is and begs him to return to his duties. Death must decide whether or not to seek his own happiness or sacrifice it so that Grazia may live.

‘스펄딩’이라는 인물은 TV 프로그램에서도 등장했던 캐릭터로 잠시의 쉴 틈도 없이 움직이며 동시에 입을 놀림으로써 황당하면서도 통쾌한 웃음을 선사한다. 어느 날 리튼하우스 부인의 대저택에서 화려한 파티가 개최된다. 이 파티에는 탐험가 대장 지오프리티 스펄딩이 참가하며 또한 부유한 예술후원가 로스코 W. 챈들러가 보가드의 유명한 그림 ‘사냥후’를 파티장에 전시한다고 하여 더욱 화제가 되고 있다. 곧 파티가 시작되고 많은 사람들이 모여들면서 파티장은 소란스러워진다. 한편 이 곳에 온 그레이스와 존은 서로 사랑하는 사이이지만 아직 알려지지 않은 화가인 존의 경제능력이 없어 결혼을 하지 못하고 있는 상태이다. 그들은 존을 세상에 알리기 위해 존이 베낀 보가드의 ‘사냥후’를 몰래 진품과 바꿔치기 하기로 한다. 수많은 소동 끝에 그림을 바꿔치기 하지만 사람들은 곧 이를 알아차린다. 오랜 범인 색출 작업 끝에 경찰이 출동하기에 이르고 결국 사람들은 존과 그레이스가 한 짓이라는 것을 알아낸다. 하지만 사람들의 요청에 의해 경찰은 범인들을 너그러이 용서하고 존은 그의 그림 실력을 인정받기에 이른다. 과 함께 막스 형제가 브로드웨이에서 활동할 당시 인기를 끌었던 뮤지컬을 영화화한 작품. 영화는 아프리카 탐험가인 제프린 스펄딩을 주축으로 부유한 리튼하우스 부인의 저택에 초대받은 손님들과 사라진 그림을 둘러싼 좌충우돌을 유쾌하게 그렸다. 파라마운트사에서 제작한 막스 형제의 두 번째 작품이자 뉴욕 퀸즈의 파라마운트 아스토리아 스튜디오에서 촬영한 마지막 작품이기도 한다. 아스토리아 스튜디오의 일부는 현재 미국영상박물관(The American Museum of the Moving Image)로 사용되고 있다.
