Kanzaki-gumi captures the Toshin-gumi oil fields mined by the first boss. Umebayashi explodes in anger and attacks Kanzaki-gumi, but...

On a small island, inhabited by only fourteen hundred people, a young fisherman's son, Shinji falls in love with Hatsue, the daughter of the richest and most difficult man on the island. Despite their differences in class, they begin to meet and rumors spread of them having an illicit affair. Soon after, Shinji jumps into a stormy sea to help a ship in distress. The vessel turns out to be owned by Hatsue's arrogant father, who now becomes an understanding and sympathetic parent and allows the two lovers to marry.

Based on Muneta Hiroshi's military novel. The main character, Yamaguchi Zensuke, is a military dog soldier. He joins the army and winds up sent overseas to China as a part of the military dog unit. He's ridiculed by others due to his inability to advance.

Frustrated with the bad behavior of his lord, Inaba Yajuro (Otomo) declares that he is leaving the clan and sets off on a journey that leads him into a small town besieged by a violent group of brigands. In a kind of homage to Kurosawa's 7 Samurai, the townspeople have been unable to defend themselves and Inaba sets out to teach them how to stand up for themselves. Meanwhile the vile Lord Yasumasa has sent the 4 finest swordsmen in the clan out to hunt Inaba down and kill him. Led by the magnificent Ichibei (Konoe), a master of weaponry in his own right, everything points to an ultimate showdown between the former friends in a battle to the death.

A laid-back man tries to become a member of the yakuza.

Shinko Terasawa was always considered to be the odd ball of the bunch. At a time when romance was against school regulations, Shinko was the first to take a bite out of the forbidden fruit. Expelled from her former school, she finds herself in an all-girls school in Jokamachi, where rumors fly. One day, Shinko delivers an anonymous love letter addressed to her English teacher, Ms. Shimazaki. Convinced that the students are playing a prank, Ms. Shimazaki is adamant about getting to the bottom of this "problem”.

딸 미치코와 함께 살고 있는 초로의 신사 히라야마. 히라야마는 친한 친구로부터 딸을 결혼시키라는 이야기를 듣지만 자신의 눈에 비친 딸은 어리게만 보인다. 이후 술에 취한 중학교 은사를 집까지 배웅했다가, 그 옛날 아름다웠던 은사의 딸이 결혼도 하지 않은 채 아버지를 걱정하며 늙고 초췌한 모습으로 변해있는 모습을 보고 딸 미치코를 떠올린다. 일본영화계 전체가 하향세를 그릴 즈음 오즈와 노다 콤비가 만든 마지막 작품이자 오즈의 유작. 실제 미혼으로 평생을 살았던 오즈가 어머니에 대해 느끼는 애정은 남달랐고, 이 작품의 시나리오 집필 중에 어머니를 잃은 오즈가 바라보는 노년의 고독 또한 다른 사람들보다 더욱 가혹하고 엄격할 수밖에 없어 보인다. 밝고 유머러스한 화면의 저변에 흐르는 적막감이 선명하게 그려져 가슴을 에이는 이 영화는 이제까지의 작품 중 최고의 원숙미를 자랑하는 영화다. 부드러운 유머와 함께 이제까지 즐겨 다루어왔던 이전 테마로 다시 돌아간 작품이다.

(2014년 한국시네마테크협의회 - 요시다 기주 + 오카다 마리코 특별전) 일본 남부의 한적한 온천의 만난 두 남녀의 17년 간에 걸친 사랑 이야기이다. 아름다운 풍경을 배경으로, 남녀간의 애정이 변하면서 이윽고 비극적 라스트를 향해 흘러가 끝내 죽음을 맞게 되는 과정을 훌륭한 영상미로 승화시켰다. 이 영화의 여주인공 오까다 마리꼬는 이 작품이 100회 출연 기념작일만큼 당시 인기 여배우였는데,신인감독인 요시다 요시시게를 지명하여 이 영화에 출연했다. 2년 뒤 두사람은 결혼했고,그녀는 남편이 된 요시다 감독의 작품에 다수 출연했다.

과부인 어머니와 함께 살기를 바라는 딸은 어머니가 재혼하고 싶어한다고 믿게 되자 결국 결혼을 결심하지만 어머니를 걱정해 결혼을 망설인다. 딸의 친구들은 그녀의 혼인을 돕기 위해 나선다. 결국 친구들은 그녀와 어머니 모두를 결혼시키기로 계획하고, 그들 중 평소 미망인에게 연정을 품고 있던 히라야마가 그녀에게 마음을 고백하는데... 돈 사토미의 소설을 기초로 오즈 야스지로와 노다 고고가 각색한 작품으로 아기자기한 에피소드들을 아름답고 섬세하게 그려낸 풍속 희극이자 풍부한 유머와 오즈적 에로스가 느껴지는 품격있는 작품. 오즈의 1949년작 <만춘>을 변형해 제작되었으며, <만춘>에서의 아버지와 딸의 관계가 이 영화에서는 어머니와 딸의 관계로 바뀌었다. 작품에서 가을이라는 계절은 부모들의 세대를 일컫는 말로 결혼이라는 주제와 혼자된 부모를 두고 떠나기를 망설이는 딸의 관계를 역시 중심적인 주제로 다루고 있다.

오밀조밀 모여 서로가 서로에 대해 훤히 알고 지내는 마을에서 이웃들간에 사소한 여러 가지 일들이 벌어진다. 접촉이 많으니 만큼 별 것 아닌 마찰도 많고 서로에 대한 구설수도 많다. 보수적인 이웃사람들로부터 문제아로 손가락질받는 신세대 부부는 텔레비젼을 갖고 있고, 그래서 그 집에는 동네 아이들이 항상 들끓는다. 어른들은 아이들이 신세대 부부와 접촉하는 것을 못마땅해 하며 눈살을 찌푸린다. 그 집에 모이는 아이들 중에는 미노루와 이사무 형제도 끼어 있는데, 부모에게 텔레비젼을 사달라고 조른다. 부모는 안된다고 딱 잘라 말하지만, 어린 두 꼬마는 묵비권을 행사하며 불만을 표시한다. 가족들에게는 물론 이웃 어른에게나 학교 선생님에게까지도 계속되는 침묵의 시위는 많은 문제를 야기시킨다. 아침인사를 먼저 건낸 이웃집 아주머니는 아이들의 묵묵부답이 부모가 시켜서 일부러 모른 척하는 것이 아닐까 하는 오해를 하게 되고, 이것은 이웃간의 불화를 조장하는 하나의 시발점이 된다.

A young woman tries to keep her family together after her father disowns her sister.

호리에 집안에 시집을 간 요코는 자신과 나이차가 별로 나지 않는 의붓아들 히로시 때문에 걱정이 많다. 그녀를 잘 따르는 듯 보이던 히로시는 곧 함부로 행동을 하기 시작하고, 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 요코는 7년 전 성폭행을 당했던 기억을 떠올리고 큰 충격을 받는다.

아버지 히라야마는 딸이 성품 좋고 가정적이고 능력 있는 남자를 만날 수 있도록 도움주기를 원한다. 하지만 말이 없고 자식과 살갑게 대하지 않는 히라야마의 성격상 딸은 그런 아버지의 의중을 파악하기 힘들다. 어느 날 딸 세츠코가 결혼할 상대가 있다고 하자 히라야마는 불같이 화를 낸다. 그리고 결혼식에 참석하지 않겠다고 선언한다.

혼기에 찬 노리코는 조건이 좋은 혼처를 거부하고 부모 형제와 상의 없이 오빠의 친구이자 아이 딸린 홀아비 켄이치와 결혼하겠다고 선언한다. 갑작스런 노리코의 태도에 가족들은 당황한다. 오즈 야스지로의 대다수 영화들이 산업화와 서구화에 따른 가정의 해체에 관한 것이듯 이 작품도 딸의 결혼으로 대가족이 해체된다는 기본 골격을 따라 몇 개의 에피소드로 연결 된 홈 드라마이다. “스토리 자체보다 더욱 깊은 의미를 지닌 ‘윤회’라든가 ‘무상’이라든가 하는 것을 묘사하고 싶었다”는 오즈의 언급처럼 이 작품에서 스토리나 플롯이 중요한 기능을 하지 않음은 명백하게 드러난다. 일상적인 삶에 대한 세심한 탐구, 이야기의 과감한 생략, 시공간의 독특한 사용, 계속해서 변하는 행동의 리듬을 통해 오즈 특유의 소시민적 관점이 투영된 작품이다.
