외롭게 살고 있던 청년 윌라드는 벤이라는 쥐들의 두목을 길들여 심복으로 데리고 있었다. 어느날 윌라드가 배신하자 벤의 지휘로 쥐들이 윌라드를 죽였는데 처참히 죽어있는 윌라드의 일기로부터 범인은 다름아닌 쥐들이었음이 증명된다. 그즈음 윌라드의 집을 순찰하던 한 경찰관이 누군가에 살해당하자 조용하던 마을은 갑자기 공포의 분위기 속에 빠지고 신변의 안전을 위해 마을을 떠나는 사람들이 속속 생겨난다. 그러나 그 마을에 살고 있던 대니라는 소년만은 이를 무서워하지 않는다. 대니는 심장병 수술을 받은 지 얼마 안되는 외로운 소년으로 어머니와 누이가 항상 따뜻히 대해주는데도 불구하고 늘 외롭게 혼자있기를 좋아한다. 이런 대니의 마음에 강한 호기심을 유발시킨 것이 다름아닌 공포의 쥐 벤이었다. 그후 대니와 벤간에는 순수한 우정이 지속된다. 그러나 벤은 부하들의 식량 공급을 위해 수퍼마켓과 곡식을 실은 트럭 등을 공격했고 이에 카트랜드 수사부장은 이들의 소탕작전을 개시한다. 마을 전체를 불지르고 이들 소굴을 차례대로 덥쳐간다.

In 1944, Capt. Josiah J. Newman is the doctor in charge of Ward 7, the neuropsychiatric ward, at an Army Air Corps hospital in Arizona. The train is attacked by Indians and Harvey, hoping to persuade Aguila, the chief, to call off the attack due to Harvey's having saved his son's life, leaves the train to negotiate. He is captured and the rest of the train is wiped out except for two sisters. Escaping and showing up in town later, Harvey is nearly hanged as a deserter, but gets away. Eventually caught by the sheriff and his posse, they are attacked by Indians. This time the Indians are defeated and Aguila, captured and dying, reveals the identity of the white man who engineered the initial attack on the wagon train, just as the perpetrator rides up behind them.

After a deadly confrontation which costs dozens of lives on both sides, Osceola rescues Caldwell, whereupon the latter is court-martialed. Later on, Osceola comes to Fort King to talk peace, and is promptly killed by persons unknown. An attempt is made to frame Caldwell for the killing, but the truth eventually prevails.

Once there, Stacey Delmore, a Four Star associate producer left in charge of the studio while Forbes is out of town, discovers that the screenplay writers have prepared a script that has Kay Kyser playing a glamorous lover in an exotic European setting.
