전작〈로라〉에 이어지는 프레민저의 스타일리시한 필름누아르. 몰락한 홍보담당원 에릭 스탠튼은 버스 차비를 낼 돈조차 없이 떠돌아다니다 캘리포니아의 작은 마을 월튼에 도착한다. 마을의 유지 조 엘리스와 매들리 교수를 구슬려 머물 곳을 마련한 스탠튼은 마을 커피숍에서 일하는 아름다운 아가씨 스텔라에게 한눈에 반한다. 하지만 스텔라는 가난한 그와는 결혼하지 않겠다고 한다. 돈이 필요해진 스탠튼은 자신에게 관심을 보이는 부유한 노처녀 준 밀스와 결혼한 뒤 돈을 챙기고 이혼할 계획을 세운다. 하지만 스탠튼이 준과 결혼하고 얼마 후, 스텔라가 살해되면서 사태는 급변한다. 은퇴한 경찰 출신의 사립탐정 마크 저드가 수사에 나서고, 유력한 용의자로 몰린 스탠튼은 캘리포니아로 도망친다.

1905년, 에디 존슨(Eddie Johnson : 죠지 몽고메리 분)은 옛 친구인 존 로코(Joe Rocco : 세사 로메로 분)가 경영하는 코니 아일랜드의 화려한 영업소, '오션 가든스'을 찾는다. 하지만 존 로코는 그를 그다지 반기지 않고 에디는 로코의 가게 건너편에서 가게를 하고 있는 프랭키(Frankie : 필 실버스 분)와 함께 사업을 구상한다. 한편 에디는 조의 여자인 불같은 성미의 댄서 케이트 팔리(Kate Farley: 베티 그레이블)가 스타가 될 잠재성이 있다고 생각하고 케이트를 다듬어 가기 시작한다. 결국 케이트는 일류 연예인의 자질을 갖추게 되고 윌리엄 해머스타인(William Hammerstein : 매트 브리그스)의 후원 아래 브로드웨이의 일류 뮤지컬 스타가 된다. 하지만 정작 케이트를 열심히 키우던 에디는 조의 계략으로 케이트와 헤어지고 이후 케이트는 에디의 라이벌이 돼 버린 존 로코와 사귀게 된다. 하지마 머지않아 케이트는 자신이 사랑하는 에디의 품으로 돌아간다.

샘 크레그(스펜서 트레이시)는 뉴욕 스포츠 기자다. 해외통신원 테스 하딩(캐서린 헵번)이 기고한 스포츠 무일함에 대한 논평에 분노를 느낀 샘은 반론기사를 실는다. 이 기사에 다시 테스가 반론기사를 실으면서 두사람은 만나게 되는 날까지 반론에 반론이 계속된다. 마침내 두사람은 만나게 되고 샘은 테스를 야구장으로 데리고 가면서 두사람의 논쟁은 끝나지만.. 두사람은 사랑에 빠지게 되면서 결혼하기에 이른다. 그러나 그들의 행복한 결혼 생활은 그들의 서로 다른 라이프 스타일로 인해 위기에 처하고 일에 중독된 테스를 견디다 못한 샘은 이별을 고하고 시골로 떠난다. 홀로된 테스는 허전함과 외로움에 느낀다. 여성운동가인 엘렌이 아버지와 결혼하게 되면서 엘런으로부터 모든 것을 이루웠지만 늘 외로웠다는 그녀의 말을 듣게 되면서 테스는 결혼에 대하여 진지하게 다시 생각하게 된다. 결국 테스는 샘을 찾아가고.. 생활이 바뀌지 않는한 서로에게 불행할 것이라며 거절하는 샘에게 아내로서 노력하겠으니 다시 시작하자고 하는데..

After her family's mansion is burned down by Yankee soldiers for hiding the rebel leader Captain Sam Starr (Scott) Belle Shirley (Tierney) vows to take revenge. Breaking Starr out of prison, she joins his small guerrilla group for a series of raids on banks and railroads, carpetbaggers and enemy troops. Belle's bravado during the attacks earns her a reputation amongst the locals as well as the love of Starr himself. The pair get married, but their relationship starts to break down when Sam Starr lets a couple of psychotic rebels into the gang, leaving Belle to wonder if he really cares about the Southern cause.

But then Ilonka secretly sends one of the drummer's waltzes to the Austrian Emperor with his weekly order of pastries. Her act paves the way toward the tuneful and joyous fulfillment of the gypsy's prediction.

She marries Dorgan but makes a play for Mason when her husband is on duty. The romantic rivalry is forgotten when Dorgan must rescue Mason and his crew from a sunken sub.
