It is night in Warsaw. Two very different homes. In one, a father watches sports lying on the sofa, expecting the son to do the same. In another apartment, a wealthy-looking mother sits at the table to dine with her daughter, completely different from her. At the same time, the boy and the girl embark on a nocturnal adventure of transformation, during which they strip off the various stratifications of gender that they have inherited. The streets of the city are transformed into a liberating walkway. When by chance they meet – face to face, body to body – they mirror each other in silence, offering comfort, safety.

A few years back tragic events tied the fate of three Catholic priests. From then on they meet on every anniversary of the disaster to celebrate their survival. On an everyday basis they have their ups and downs. Lisowski works at the curia in a big city, has a career and is dreaming of the Vatican. Problem is, archbishop Mordowicz, an opulent church official who uses his political influence to build the largest sanctuary in Poland, gets in his way. The second priest, Trybus, is a village parson. He ministers to a poor community and gives in to human weaknesses more and more often. Kukuła is not faring well either. Despite his fervent faith, he loses the trust of his parishioners actually overnight. Soon the stories of the three clergymen are going to join once again.

Beksiński is a family man who wants only the best for his loving wife Zofia, neurotic son Tomasz and the couple's aging mothers. His daily painting to classical music eventually pays off and he makes a name for himself in contemporary art. Good Catholic woman Zofia tries to hold the family together, but troubled son Tomasz proves to be a handful with his violent outbursts and suicidal threats. Their relief is brief when he starts dating women and becomes a radio presenter and movie translator, and the concerned parents must be on constant watch to prevent their son from hurting himself. But Beksiński never believed that family life would always be sunshine and rainbows. As he tapes everything with his beloved camcorder, the 28-year Beksiński saga unfolds through paintings, near-death experiences, dance music trends and funerals...

제2차 세계 대전이 한창이던 폴란드의 리버포. 가족의 생계를 위해 빈집 털이와 하수구 수리공으로 생계를 연명하던 소하. 어느 날 그는 온갖 악취와 암흑뿐인 하수구로 잔인한 죽음을 피하기 위해 숨어든 유대인들을 발견하게 되고, 그들은 소하에게 비밀을 지켜달라며 돈을 건넨다. 이들을 신고만 해도 돈을 벌 수 있지만, 소하는 결국 그들의 부탁을 들어주며 칩거생활을 도와주게 된다. 그러던 중 마을에 누군가 유대인을 도와주고 있다는 소문이 돌기 시작하면서 소하는 자신과 가족의 목숨이 위태로워질 수 있다는 불안을 느끼게 되고, 다시 조심스럽게 하수구로 걸음을 옮기는데…

이번에 그리너웨이의 주인공이 된 인물은 바로 네덜란드의 거장 램브란트. 일찍이 램브란트는 전 세계 가장 위대한 화가로 추앙 받기도 했지만, 나중에는 결국 불명예를 안고 무일푼으로 세상을 떠났다. 암스테르담 머스켓 민병대의 초상화를 의뢰 받은 렘브란트는 그림을 그리면서 17세기 네덜란드 사회의 음모를 드러내게 되고, 이 작업은 예술가이자 한 인간으로서의 그를 몰락시키는 결과를 몰고 온다. 그리너웨이는 렘브란트의 가장 유명한 작품에 관한 조망에서 더 나아가, 사회의 규범이 아웃사이더들에 의해 파괴되는 것을 용납하지 않았던 사회의 모습과, 시대에 의해 규정되고 무시되었던 한 인간을 그리고 있다. 그리너웨이는 예술의 본성에 대한 논쟁을 촉발시키기보다는 “성과 죽음, 그 밖에 얘기할 것이 무엇이 있겠는가?”라는 질문을 담아 한 인간의 일대기를 그리고 있다. - 제12회 부산국제영화제
