까르꼬(Antoine Carco: 제라르 디빠르디유 분)는 시내에 유명 나이트 클럽의 사장으로 클럽의 인기 댄서 레지나와 약혼한 사이이다. 하는 일마다 승승장구하던 그에게 어느날 홍콩에서 옛 친구의 전화가 걸려온다. 그 친구는 자신의 5살짜리 아들 바오를 빠리에 있는 그의 중국인 아내에게 데려다 달라고 부탁하고 홍콩 마피아들에게 살해당한다. 친구가 아이에게 전해주라던 4천만 달러에 눈독을 들인 까르꼬는 당장 홍콩으로 날아가지만 그 역시 마피아들의 추격을 받게 된다. 우여곡절 끝에 아이를 만나 수도원에 맡겨둔 채 혼자 돈을 찾아 가려던 까르꼬는 그마저 여의치 않게 되지만 운좋게도 수도원의 신부를 만나 온갖 해프닝 끝에 비행기를 타고 무사히 탈출한다. 하지만 거짓말은 곧 탄로가 나고 신부는 까르꼬에게 후회할 것이라는 말을 남기고 돌아선다. 신부가 장담한대로 까르꼬 앞에는 자신과 똑같이 생긴 수호천사가 나타나 하는 일마다 일일이 잔소리를 해대기 시작하는데...

Joey Wellman, an American cartoonist from Cleveland now largely forgotten at home, visits France with his partner Lena to attend an exhibition in Paris about the comic strip (bande dessinée) which features his work. He also hopes to be reconciled with his daughter Elsie who has been a student in Paris for two years, in flight from the American culture of which she sees her father as a typical example. Elsie is naively infatuated with French literature, and is trying to secure an introduction to the brilliant university professor Christian Gauthier, an expert on Flaubert but also an enthusiast for comic books. The meeting of father and daughter goes badly, but Elsie is persuaded to join Joey and Lena for the weekend at the country house of Gauthier's mother, Isabelle. During a comic-themed masquerade party, all of the characters are made to reconsider their present and past relationships.

The "black robe" in the title of this suspense film belongs to a female lawyer, Florence Nat who has just lost a case in which she defended Simon Risler, a man wrongly accused of murder. Risler escapes before he can be put in prison, and seeks help from attorney Nat in finding the real killer, partly by going after the police inspector who framed him in the first place. A retired surgeon, in the process of setting up a drug rehab clinic gets involved in solving Risler's case, and soon the solution seems to be pointing to high-ranking figures with every desire and ample means to keep the truth well-hidden.

Commandant Gardefort, horseman at the Cadre Noir Riding Academy in Saumur, having given up hope of promotion decides to retire. To fill his time until then, he buys a mare, Milady, and in two years trains her to the highest dressage haute ecole standards. But he finds himself in dire financial straits over his divorce, and is obliged to sell the mare. She is bought by a rich Belgian banker, who transforms Milady into a circus horse. Visiting him, Gardefort resolves the situation in the only way he sees fit.

After the death of his mother, middle-aged insurance employee inherits her small cottage surrounded by a garden. Selling the cottage which is situated on unexploited ground near the center of a big city makes him a rich man and he buys a big house in the countryside. He takes some time off and decides to throw a big garden party at the house and invite all his colleagues from the office. 파리 최고의 악명 높은 도둑 조르주 (장 폴 벨몽도 분)는 어린시절 삼촌 밑에서 자란다. 하지만 후견인이던 삼촌이 어마어마한 유산을 모조리 탕진해 버리자 빈털터리 신세가 된다. 사랑하는 사촌 샬롯(쥬느비에브 비졸드 분)과 결혼을 희망하지만 그 또한 삼촌의 계략으로 힘들게 된다. 그가 집을 비운 사이 삼촌이 샬롯을 돈 많은 남자와 약혼시켜 버린 것이다. 조르주는 자포자기 심정으로 샬롯 약혼자의 집을 털어 복수하기로 결심한다. 우연한 기회에 시작한 도둑질에 재미를 느낀 조르주는 도둑질을 직업으로 삼는다. 부자들의 집을 털며 그들을 맘껏 비웃어 주던 조르주는 어느덧 부정으로 축적한 재산으로 그동안 자신이 경멸해 왔던 게으른 부자들 행세를 하고 있는데... 자신을 파멸시킨 사회에 대한 보복으로 도둑질을 시작한 사나이가 어느덧 도둑질이 자신의 자연스러운 생활이 되어버리는 이야기. 누벨바그의 거장인 루이 말(Louis Malle) 감독으로서는 그답지 않은 코믹 터치로 된 작품이지만, 그 속에 담긴 사회비판의 메시지는 아주 강하고 풍자가 신랄하기까지 하다. 제네비에즈 부졸드가 그의 연인이 되는 여도적 역으로, 국제무대에 얼굴을 드러낸 영화이다. 감상 포인트: 전통과 진보 사이를 자유롭게 넘나들며 독창적인 작품 세계를 만들었던 루이 말 감독의 작품으로 모스크바 국제 영화제에서 감독상 후보에 오른 수작. 조르주 다리엥의 소설을 바탕으로 하고 있다. , , , , 등으로 잘 알려진 프랑스 배우 장 폴 벨몽도의 연기가 인상적이다. 불로뉴에서 중고가구점을 운영하는 엘렌은 20여년 만에 옛 애인 알퐁스를 만난다. 알퐁스와 엘렌은 과거의 기억을 떠올리고, 왜 자신들이 헤어지게 됐는가에 대한 불일치하는 기억을 드러내기 시작한다. 과거의 기억에 사로잡힌 인간들이 엮어내는 인간관계를 복합적으로 묘사한 작품으로 레네의 초기작 중에서도 가장 심원한 경지에 도달한 작품으로 평가받는다.

암 진단 결과를 기다리던 가수 클레오는 곧 죽음을 맞이한다는 점괘를 받는다. 불안에 잠긴 클레오는 의사의 최종 진단을 기다리는 동안 끊임없이 파리 곳곳을 배회하기 시작한다. '파리에서 만들어진 가장 아름다운 영화'라는 평가를 받았던 이 영화는 감독인 아녜스 바르다에게 최초로 국제적인 명성을 가져다주었다. 클레오의 모든 행동과 사건들은 실제로 물리적 시간의 흐름에 따라 묘사됨으로써 그녀가 죽음에 대한 두려움에 사로잡혀 있는 모습과 그 두려움을 벗어나게 되는 과정이 동시적으로 포착된다. 영화 속에서 점차로 그녀는 자기 자신은 물론이고 죽음과 삶에 대한 새로운 시선과 통찰을 향해 나아가기 때문이다. 바르다는 이 작품에서 관습적인 이야기 전개 대신에 사진적인 것과 영화적인 것의 특성을 최대한 활용하고 있는데, 미와 추는 조우하고 그로테스크함(살아있는 개구리를 먹는 남자)과 사랑스러움(클레오의 공적 이미지)은 병치되며, 빛과 어둠, 인공적인 것과 자연적인 것은 시각적 대조를 이루고, 밝은 뮤지컬 코미디와 비극적 드라마가 서로 엮어 들어감으로써 영화는 전반적으로 대립을 통해서 미묘한 결을 구성해간다.
