2차 대전이 막 끝난 1945년, 영국 해안의 외딴 저택. 전쟁에서 남편을 잃은 독실한 천주교도 그레이스(니콜 키드먼)와 빛에 노출되면 안되는 희귀병을 가진 두 아이가 살고 있다. 어느 날, 예전에 이 저택에서 일한 적이 있다는 세 명의 하인들이 들어오게 된다. 그레이스는 두 아이를 빛으로부터 지키기 위해 커튼은 항상 쳐져 있어야 하고, 문은 항상 잠겨있어야 한다는 '절대 규칙'을 하인들에게 가르친다. 이와 때를 같이 해서 저택에는 기괴한 일들이 끊이지 않는다. 아무도 없는 방에서 발자국 소리가 들리고, 피아노가 갑자기 연주된다. 또한 딸 앤은 이상한 남자아이와 할머니가 이 집에 머물고 있다는 얘기를 반복한다. 신에 대한 믿음이 너무나 강한 그레이스는 그런 딸의 말을 인정하지 않지만 두려움은 점점 그 무게를 더해만 간다. 마침내 그레이스는 그들을 위협하는 공포의 실체와 마주하게 되는데...

런던의 한 사진 작가인 콜린은 패션 디자이너를 꿈꾸는 수렛과 사랑하는 사이. 콜린은 돈보다는 순수사진 작가를 고수하려고 하지만 수렛은 그런 콜린을 못마땅해한다. 그래서 그에게 돈이 되는 일자리를 구해주려고 애쓴다. 그러던중 그녀는 어느날 패션쇼에서 뜻하지 않게 재주를 인정받아 돈많은 유명인들과 접촉할 기회를 갖게된다. 이를 기회로 그녀는 콜린과의 결별을 선언하고, 이에 충격을 받은 콜린은 돈을 버는 일에 적극적으로 나서기 시작한다. 훌륭한 사진 기술을 인정받은 그는 파트너즈라는 사람의 제의로 그 밑에서 일하기 시작한다. 그리하여 급기야는 TV에 출연까지 하게 되는데 그 프로의 사회자가 같은 또래의 젊은이들 모두를 모독하는 발언을 서슴지 않자 이에 격분하여 그동안의 울분을 토로하고 지금까지의 생활에 환멸을 느끼게 된다.

1880년대 유럽의 귀족 일단이 '백인 사냥꾼'이란 별명을 가진 카우보이, 보스키 풀톤(스티븐 보이드 분)의 가이드 아래 뉴멕시코에서 사냥 여행을 시작한다. 영국 귀족 프레드릭(피터 반 에릭 분)의 청혼을 받고 있는 미모의 여인 이리나(브리짓 바르도 분)는 인디언 보호구역에 들어갔다가 아파치들에게 포위됐으나 샬라코(숀 코너리 분)의 도움으로 무사히 돌아온다. 샬라코는 프레드릭 일행에게 보호구역 밖으로 떠나라고 충고하지만 그들은 거절하는데. 결국 아파치가 이들의 캠프를 습격하고 안내인 풀톤(스테판 보이드 분)은 그 틈을 이용하여 재물과 탄약을 약탈하여 캠프를 떠난다. 프레드릭 일행의 위기를 알게 된 샬라코는 다시 캠프로 돌아와 일행을 안전한 고원 지대로 안내한다. 그러는 동안 샬라코와 이리나는 가까운 사이가 된다. 캠프를 떠났던 풀톤 일행은 아파치의 습격으로 전멸당하고 풀톤만 빠져 나와 샬라코에게 도움을 청한다. 고원 지대에 도착한 일행은 뒤쫓아 온 아파치와 치열한 전투를 버린다. 젊은 아파치 지도자 섀도우는 샬라코에게 1대 1 대결을 요구하고 그 결투에서 지자 샬라코 일행을 무사히 돌려보낸다.
