매년 갈리시아에서는 오래된 형태의 축제를 기념한다. 사람들은 모두 화려한 복장을 하고, 현란한 가면을 쓰고, 소의 목에 매다는 크고 낭랑한 방울이 달린 벨트까지 한다. 이들은 방문객에게 손찌검을 하며 마을 전체를 뛰어다닌다.

바다에서 배가 침몰해 사라진 남자들을 찾는 마을 사람들과 다시 살아난 사람들, 마을을 파괴하는 바다 괴물, 마녀 등의 요소로 신화적인 이야기를 창조한다.

스페인 내전이 끝나고 안쇼는 갈리시아의 고향 마을로 돌아간다. 길에서 마주친 사람들은 새로운 정권에 대한 옹호와 반대 의견을 피력하고 안쇼는 마을 분위기가 예전과 같지 않음을 느낀다.
