Misery money-lender Arpagone is looking to arrange three weddings simultaneously - to cut down on costs. One for himself and the others for his two children. 고물 승용차로 맞부딪히면서 달리는 스톡카 경주의 친구 컫과 벤. 오늘도 경기에서 공동우승, 상품으로 받은 샌드바기는 두 사람이 나누어 갖게 되었다. 이 차로 다음 경주를 나가기로 하고 벤의 공장에서 정비를 하기로 하였다. 근데 이 정비공장은 유원지 앞에 있으며 이 근방은 저항파의 최후의 토지인 것이다. 그래서 건달들이 끊임없이 그들을 몰아내려는 공작을 하고 있었다. 건달들이 선량한 시민들을 폭력으로 몰아내려고 하자 컫과 벤은 깽들의 본거지인 나이트크럽으로 쳐들어간다. 건달들이 화가 나서 쫓아갔으나 되려 당하고 만다. 그 후 다시 완전무장을 한 10명의 건달들이 오토바이를 타고 쳐들어 왔으나 이번에도 당한다. 컫과 벤은 가만히 있지 않고 나이트크럽으로 돌격, 테이블을 부수고 차를 탄 채 계단을 올라가고 드디어 건달들은 항복했다. 유원지도 옛 모습을 되찾고 법석거렸고 그 앞의 광장에는 신품 샌드바기 2대가 달리고 있었다. 컫과 벤에게 각각 1대씩 건달두목이 보낸 것이었다.

사촌 누이를 동경한 나머지 결혼까지 파기, 고독에 빠져드는 루드비히의 말년의 모습을 헬무트 버거가 열연한다. 18세에 국왕 자리에 오른 루드비히는 오스트리아 황제비가 된 사촌누이 엘리자베스를 연모한다.

제2차 세계대전이 치열했던 와중, 으로 네오리얼리즘의 계기를 만들었던 비스콘티 감독이 대전 전의 독일을 무대로 나치즘에 의해서 부와 권력을 박탈당해 가는 철강실업가 일가족의 비극을 묘사하면서 역사 그 자체까지 파헤친 집대성이라고도 할 수 있는 작품. 장검의 밤이라는 암호명으로 히틀러에 의해 자행된 SA 대원 학살 사건이 역사적 배경이다. 나치가 대두해 온 33년의 겨울, 루루 지방에서 세력을 가진 철강 왕, 에센벡 가의 모임의 밤, 당사자가 누군가의 음모에 의해서 암살당한다. 이 사건을 계기로 발생하는 일가족의 골육상쟁의 싸움과 그것으로 인해 어부지리를 얻으려고 하는 음험한 나치 친위대의 존재를 묘사해낸다.

This is Vittorio De Sica's original 89-minute "Terminal Station" which was released first in April 1953 as "Stazione Termini," the Italian title of Cesare Zavattini's story. A year later in May 1954, Columbia Pictures released a different version with the alternative title "Indiscretion of an American Wife" which producer David O. Selznick had re-edited and cut to a shortened 64 minutes, dramatically altering characterization by removing its establishing shots and neorealist touches.

로마의 언니 집에 갔던 미국 부인 메리(Mary Forbes: 제니퍼 존스 분)는 관광 통역을 맡은 조반니(Giovanni Doria: 몽고메리 클리프트 분)라는 청년을 사랑하게 된다. 다혈질의 조반니도 매리를 소개받자 한 눈에 반해버린다.그러나 메리는 발육이 늦은 딸과 8년을 같이 생활해 온 남편을 잊을 수가 없다. 남편은 자신이 건사해주지 않으면 자기 양말하나도 제대로 찾아신지 못하는 그런 사람이었다. 조반니와의 로마에서 보낸 짧은 만남이 꿈같은 시간이었다면 메리가 돌아가야할 곳은 현실이다. 현실은 때로는 지겹고 누추한 곳이지만 꿈은 꿈일 뿐이다. 메리는 자신과 함께 이탈리아에서 눌러 살 것을 간청하는 조반니에게 우리가 헤어질 수 밖에 없는 것은 거역할 수 밖에 없는 우리의 운명이라고 단호하게 말한다. 절망감에 휩싸인 조반니는 자신의 감정을 추수리지 못해 메리의 뺨을 때리고 그곳을 떠난다. 역 밖으로 나온 조반니는 한 동안 망설이다 다시 역 구내로 들어온다. 그리고 후회를 하고 메리를 찾아나선다. 가까스로 메리를 찾은 조반니. 두 연인은 사람들의 눈을 피해 빈 객차 안으로 뛰어든다. 그리고 격정적인 입맞춤을 나눈다. 그런데 그만 공안원에게 발각되어 풍기문란 혐의로 역구내 파출소로 연행된다. 메리는 파출소장에게 8시 30분 파리행 열차를 타지 못하면 자신의 인생은 끝장이라고 통사정을 한다. 취조 결과 파출소장은 이 여자에게 가정이 있고 또 조반니와 이별하기 위해 다음번 파리행 열차를 타고 싶어하는 것을 알고 그녀를 훈방한다. 8시 25분 드디어 메리는 기차에 오르고 덜커덕 차가 움직인다. 움직이는 열차를 향해 조반니가 뛰어간다. 하지만 점점 멀어지는 기차와 메리의 모습. 조반니는 넘어지고 만다. 눈물을 글썽이는 메리. 지나가던 사람이 다치지 않았느냐고 묻자 조반니는 "괜찮아요 상처는 없어요"라고 대답한다.

정부에서 주는 연금으로 최소한의 생활을 영위하며 살아가던 늙은 퇴직자 움베르토는 방세를 올려달라는 하숙집 여주인의 요구로 곤란을 겪는다. 친구라곤 하숙집 하녀 마리아와 유일한 동반자인 작은 개 플릭 뿐이었던 그는 정신적, 물질적 궁핍 속에서 점점 고독 속으로 빠져든다. 그가 어느 날 자선병원에서 돌아 왔을 때, 그의 벽은 공사장 인부들에 의해 허물어져있고, 그의 개도 보이지 않는다. 방세를 지불하지 못한 움베르토는 결국 쫓겨나고 마침내 자살을 기도하게 되는데...

롤로타 부인(엠마 그라마티카 분)은 야채 밭에 물을 주다가 갓 태어난 아이를 발견한다. 부인은 이 아이를 정성껏 기르지만, 노환으로 아이가 6살이 될 무렵 돌아가시고, 이 아이, 토토는 고아원으로 보내진다. 성인이 된 토토(프란체스카 골리사노 분)는 고아원에서 나와 일거리를 찾기 위해 밀라노의 번화가로 간다. 모두를 향해 반갑게 인사하는 토토에게 호감을 갖는 이도, 친절을 베푸는 사람도 없다. 밤이 되도록 방황하던 토토는 어느 노인이 도둑질 하는 장면을 목격하고, 그를 잡으려고 쫓아간다. 눈물을 흘리며 애원하는 노인을 보고 마음이 측은해진 토토는 노인에게 가방을 가져가라고 한다. 노인은 잠자리를 구하지 못한 토토를 자신의 판잣집으로 초대한다. 그곳에서 밤을 보내고 아침이 되어 둘러본 판잣촌은 바람만 불어도 날아갈 정도로 형편없었고, 토토는 이들을 위해 새로운 집을 지어 주기로 한다. 거기에서 에비지(Edvige)라는 여인을 보고 한 눈에 사랑에 빠진다. 집들이 거의 완성이 됐을 무렵, 광장 한 가운데서 석유가 뿜어져 나오고, 땅 주인인 모비(Mobbi)는 공권력을 동원하여 토토와 판잣촌 사람들을 쫓아내려고 한다. 그 순간 하늘에서 롤로타 부인의 영혼이 나타나 토토에게 소원을 들어주는 신비한 비둘기를 선물한다. 토토는 이 비둘기로 사람들의 온갖 소원들을 들어주는데, 어느 순간 비둘기가 사라진다. 그 사이 땅 주인은 판잣촌을 장악하고, 토토와 사람들을 감옥에 집어넣는다. 갇혀있는 사람들을 보고 마음 아파하는 토토에게 롤로타 부인은 비둘기를 다시 보내주고, 토토는 사람들을 자유롭게 해 달라고 소원을 빈다.
