1920년, 프랑스 프로방스 지방, 병역을 마치고 고향으로 돌아온 위골랭 스베랑은 백부 세자르 빠뻬 스베랑의 집 근처에 정착한다. 위골랭은 카네이션 재배에 꿈을 갖고, 시험 재배를 한 다음 백부에게 보여준다. 백부인 세자르는 그의 계획에 동의하고, 투자하기로 한다. 그러나 자신의 땅에는 물이 없음에 불만인 위골랭은 인접한 카모완 가(家)의 토지에 샘이 있음을 알고 간독하고 음흉스런 지주 세자르와 음모를 짜고 그 땅에서 솟아나는 샘물을 막아버린다. 이때부터 샘을 배경으로 한 3대에 걸쳐 사랑과 숙명의 역사가 시작된다. 땅에서 솟아나는 샘물을 막아버린 그들은 그 땅을 싸게 사려는 속셈이었다. 이때, 그 땅의 주인이자 한때는 세자르의 연인이기도 했던 플로레트가 얼마 전에 죽어 그녀의 아들인 쟝에게 물려진다. 자신의 아들인지도 모르는 세자르는 쟝이 도시 사람에다 곱추이므로, 분명 땅을 팔려할 것이라 생각했지만, 쟝은 아내 에이메와 딸 마농을 데리고, 프로방스로 이사를 온다. 이에 위골랭과 빠뻬는 물이 없어 오래 견딜 수 없을 것이란 걸 알고 친절하게 대해준다. 샘에 대한 것은 비밀로 한 채 쟝의 가족의 그런 정성이 하늘에 통했는지, 적절할 때 비가 내려줘 그의 첫 농작은 그런 대로 성공인 셈이었다. 그러나 마을 사람들은 계속 쟝을 따돌렸고 위골랭은 위선적인 행동을 한다. 가뭄이 계속되고 쟝은 마지막 수단으로 땅을 위골랭에게 저당잡히고, 우물을 파려한다. 다이너마이트로 암벽을 폭파하던 중에 그만, 낙석에 뇌척수를 맞아 죽고 만다. 위골랭은 자신의 행동이 결국 쟝을 죽게 했다는 가책하나, 그것은 잠깐의 감정일 뿐, 에이메와 딸 마농이 집을 떠나려하자 위골랭과 빠뻬는 막았던 샘을 도로 트는데, 마농이 그 장면을 보고 경악한다.

Two men break out of prison; a rival gang ambushes them. One is mortally wounded and tells the other, Mickey, to take him to the estate of a retired robber, Noel, who lives in comfort with his lovely and beloved wife, Nicole. The man dies, and Mickey, a menacing hothead, demands money of Noel. A few days later, Mickey returns to the estate, shoots up a dinner party and threatens them again. Noel sends Nicole to an hotel and goes to his old gang to help him hunt down the dangerous Mickey. Mickey has other problems, too, including heartache for a daughter he hardly knows. Young, eager cops tail Nicole, and all are on a complicated collision course.

Henri Savin has managed a trucking company for his lover, Dominique Montlaur, for many years. Now he is planning to leave her for Julie Manet, the woman he has made pregnant, and Dominique is hysterical. She first threatens suicide, then shows up at a meeting of Savin and Julie. Dominique tries everything she can think of to break Savin and Julie apart, to no avail. Frustrated in her efforts, she jumps off a cliff and dies. Savin insists that he and Julie lie to the police about the encounter, although Dominique's death was a suicide and therefore they had no direct hand in it. Detective Waldeck investigates Dominique's death.

우루과이의 몬테 비데오. 독재정권이 이에 항거하는 젊은이들과 지식인들을 체포, 투옥시키고, 자백을 강용하는 고문이 자행된다. 미국인 필립 산토레는 A.I.D. 직원으로 파견된 인물. 운동권 조직인 투파마로 단에 브라질 영사와 함께 그가 납치되면서 그에 대한 언론과 여론의 관심이 집중된다. 그의 실제 정체는 무엇이었을까. 투파마로 단의 심문으로 그의 정체가 파헤쳐진다. 필립 산토레는 표면적으로는 평범한 미국 시민에 A.I.D. 직원으로 위장하고 있지만, 실제로는 미국 경찰서장이었던 것으로 드러난다. 이러한 사실들은 투파마로 단이 언론사에 보내는 성명서로 낱낱이 공개된다.의회는 비로소 나라의 진정한 독립에 대해 생각하게 되고, 각 정당 대표들로 구성된 의회의 조사위원회는 경찰 내부의 고질적인 고문의 실상을 파헤친다. 투파마로 단이 산토레와 브라질 대사를 납치한 목적은 투옥된 정치범들의 석방을 위해 교환하려 했던 것. 그들이 그러한 교환조건을 내걸자 교환조건을 받아들일 것을 요구하는 국내외 여론의 압력에 대통령은 사임할 수밖에 없는 입장에 몰린다. 그러나 마침 그때 경찰은 미겔을 포함한 투파마로 단의 수뇌부 몇사람을 체포하기에 이른다. 그것으로 한 풀 꺾인 투파마로 단은 정부에, 자신들의 요구가 받아들여지지 않을 경우, 산토레를 처형하겠다고 최후통첩을 한다. 그러나 수뇌부의 검거로 이미 기선을 잡은 정부의 입장은 강경하다. 미국 역시 산토레를 희생 시킴으로써 실익이 많다고 판단, 개입하지 않는다. 투파마로 단의 이미지를 폭력적으로 여론에 심어줄 기회기 때문에 투파마로 단은 두 갈래 길에 놓인다.

Accused by The Queen, a beautiful princess Bavarian, of having an illegitimate child to one of her maids of honor, he was stripped of his duties and ordered to retire to a monastery.

Artur London was arrested in 1951 in a Stalinist purge, imprisoned and tortured for two years and forced to confess in the Slansky Trial, one of the last Stalinist "show trials" in Eastern Europe. The documentary explores some of the reasons for the controversy aroused by Costa-Gavras' The Confession, which had been accused of being anti-communist, and it highlights the political importance of filmmaking which, by its nature, is a fiction intended for the general public.
