'이사벨라'는 셰익스피어 고전 속 인물을 매개로 동시대 아르헨티나 여성들의 삶을 이야기해 온 마티아스 피녜이로의 희곡 연작, 그 다섯 번째 작품이다. 마리에는 연극 '자에는 자로 MEASURE BY MEASURE'의 이사벨라 역 오디션을 준비 중이다. 그는 돈이 급해 한동안 연락을 끊었던 형제를 다시 찾고 그 과정에서 그의 애인 루시아나와 만난다. 그런데 둘은 같은 오디션을 준비 중임을 알게 되고, 함께 대사와 움직임을 연습한다. 1년 뒤 예상치 못한 모습으로 다시 만난 그들은 각자의 결심이 만들어낸 행동의 결과를 나눈다. 시간이 교차하는 가운데, 이야기는 인생의 색을 맞추는 퍼즐처럼 펼쳐진다.

아르헨티나 북부 코리엔테스 지방, 라스밀(Las Mil)이라는 작은 마을을 배경으로 펼쳐지는 우정, 사랑, 힘의 관계를 보여준다. 감독은 영화 배경이 되는 지역의 역사나 정치적 상황을 전면에 드러내거나 일절 설명하지 않는다. 하지만 부재를 통해 실제 부재했던 힘을 묘사하는 방식으로, 영화 속에 어떤 공적인 힘도 등장하지 않게 함으로써 실제 정치권력이 수년간 주민들을 방치한 결과를 약물과 빈곤을 통해 드러낸다. 시나리오는 지방 생활의 관습을 보여주는 많은 이야기 속에서 이리스와 레나타 사이의 사랑 이야기를 탄생시킨다.

피노체트 군부 독재가 극에 달한 1980년대 산티아고에서 예기치 못한 로맨스가 싹튼다. 늙고 가난한 신세로 전락한 크로스드레서 “퀸”은 어느 밤 청년 게릴라요원 카를로스의 도움을 받아 위기를 모면한다. 카를로스는 퀸에게 물건을 맡아 달라고 부탁하고, 호의로 부탁을 들어준 퀸은 자신의 아파트에 보관된 상자 속에 피노체트 정권을 무너뜨릴 무기가 들어있다는 사실을 모르는데…
