1차 대전이 진행되고 있을 무렵, 폴과 알버트, 프란츠, 뮬러, 벤은 전쟁에 참전해 조국을 구하라는 한 교수의 연설에 감동을 받아 혹독한 훈련을 마친 후 전선으로 향한다. 하지만 전선에 배치되자마자 벤은 전사하고, 프란츠는 부상으로 다리를 절단하게 된다. 정신을 차린 후, 평생 불구로 살아야한다는 사실에 이성을 잃고 날뛰던 프란츠도 병원에서 사망한다. 한편, 뮬러는 프란츠가 아끼던 군화를 받게 되자 아주 기뻐하지만 그 역시 전사한다. 결국 폴은 전쟁터에서 전쟁의 참상에 대해 서서히 깨닫기 시작하는데...

Rich old Cyrus West's relatives are waiting for him to die so they can inherit. But he stipulates that his will be read 20 years after his death. On the appointed day his expectant heirs arrive at his brooding mansion. The will is read and it turns out that Annabelle West, the only heir with his name left, inherits, if she is deemed sane. If she isn't, the money and some diamonds go to someone else, whose name is in a sealed envelope. Before he can reveal the identity of her successor to Annabelle, Mr. Crosby, the lawyer, disappears. The first in a series of mysterious events, some of which point to Annabelle in fact being unstable.

숙련된 벽돌공인 찰리는 일이 많지만, 일과후 술집에서 보내는 시간을 너무나 즐긴다. 그가 퇴근하고 집에 돌아오면 그의 아내는 그가 모자에 숨기고 온 봉급을 가져간다. 하지만, 그는 술집에 가기 위해 아내의 지갑을 훔치고, 즐거운 시간을 보내고 난 후, 엄청난 비가 내리는 밤에 겨우겨우 집에 도착하지만, 집에서 몽둥이를 들고 그를 기다리고 있는 아내를 보게된다.

찰리 채플린은 이 작품에서 골프장에 몰래 들어온 떠돌이 부랑자와 골프를 치고 있는 부유한 신사의 두 가지 역할을 맡고 있다. 골프장에 몰래 들어온 부랑자(찰리)는 술 취한 남편(찰리)과 말다툼을 하고 있는 한 부유한 여인을 만나게 된다. 그녀가 이 부랑자를 그녀의 남편과 혼동하면서 사건이 벌어진다.

부유한 화가에게 버림받고 갓난 어린 아이를 병원에서 낳은 여자가 키울 능력이 없어 고급차 안에 아이를 두고 간다. 그런데 자동차 도둑이 그 차를 훔치고 아이를 쓰레기통 옆에 두고 간다. 우연히 그 길을 지나가던 떠돌이 찰리가 애기 울음 소리를 듣고 얼떨결에 아이를 안게 되는데...

찰리는 폐차 직전의 자동차에 가족들을 태우고 나들이를 떠난다. 유람선 여행을 하기로 했기 때문이다. 천신만고 끝에 선착장에 도착했는데, 배는 벌써 출발신호를 울린다. 찰리는 담뱃불을 끄기 위해 재떨이를 찾아 잽싸게 뛰어갔다 오지만 이미 배는 선착장에서 떠나기 시작한다. 때마침 뚱뚱한 부인이 앞으로 쓰러지면서 그녀의 발은 선착장에 걸쳐지고, 몸은 배에 걸쳐지면서 눕게 된다. 이 바람에 찰리는 그 부인의 등을 밟고 마침내 배에 오르는 데 성공한다.

Professor Bosco, a poor flea trainer, rents a bed in a flophouse. Before going to bed, he rallies his troops and once he has made sure his beloved fleas are settled for the night, the professor prepares to sleep the sleep of the just man. Unfortunately he accidentally knocks the box off his bed and the fleas have the time of their lives pestering Bosco's neighbors. To get the escapees back in their box again, the trainer resorts to... his whip! All is back to normal one more time. But not for long, as a stray dog enters the flophouse and very unwisely opens the box, thus creating new havoc.

영화 에는 ‘비참한 생활'이란 의미가 담겨있다. 이 영화에서 찰리가 들개 스크랩을 버리지 않고 보살피는 까닭은 그 개를 통해 자기 자신을 보기 때문일 것이다. 길거리에서 잠을 자는 떠돌이 생활은 채플린 자신의 체험에서 온 것이기도 하며 당시 사회모습의 반영이기도 하다. 가난한 찰리는 공터에서 살고 있다. 일자리를 구하려고 애쓰지만 번번히 실패하는 찰리. 실의에 빠져 돌아오던 찰리는 다른 떠돌이 개들한테 공격을 받던 암캐 스크랩을 구해주고 집으로 데려온다. 스크랩의 도움으로 소시지를 훔치는 데 성공한 찰리는 댄스홀에 가지만 돈이 없어서 쫓겨나고 만다. 그런데 스크랩이 땅에 묻힌 지갑을 우연히 파내자, 찰리는 그 안에 든 돈으로 댄스홀에 간다.
