19세기 이탈리아의 귀족사회. 웰시 툴리오(지안카를로 지아니니)는 그의 친구들과 일반 사람들이 보는 곳에서 그의 정부인 테레사(제니퍼 오닐)을 에스코트하는 것을 아무렇지도 않게 생각한다. 그는 단 한 순간도 자신의 욕망을 만족스럽게 채우지 못한다. 반면 부인 줄리아나(라우라 안토넬리)는 그런 남편으로 인해 계속 고통에 시달린다. 그런데 사실상 툴리오와의 관계가 끝나다 시피한 부인 줄리아나가 젊은 소설가와 사귀게 됐을 때 툴리오는 복잡한 심경이 된다. 이후 아내가 다른 사람의 아이를 임신했다는 사실을 받아들일 수 없게 되자, 툴리오는 결국 자살을 결심한다.

The fictional town of Villa Romero is the set upon which the events of Spain's civil war play out. 제퍼슨 역에서 출발한 역마차 한 대가 길라 벤드라는 마을 근처를 지나던 중에 현상금 사냥꾼들에 의해 저지당한다. 이 현상금 사냥꾼들은 살인죄로 현상금 3천 달러가 걸린 필립 버미어라는 인물을 찾는 데 혈안이 돼 있다. 역마차에 타고 있던 전직 보안관 클레이튼은 숨어 있던 필립을 가장 먼저 찾아내 도주하도록 돕는다. 필립이 가는 곳마다 현상금 사냥꾼들이 들이닥치지만, 필립은 번번이 클레이튼의 도움을 받아 목적지인 색슨 시로 향한다. 필립은 자신이 죽인 걸로 판결이 난 색슨을 결단코 죽이지 않았으며, 단지 자신의 아버지를 살해한 범인에게 복수하고 싶을 뿐이라는 속내를 털어놓는다. 색슨 시로 가는 길에 클레이튼은 자신이 색슨 살인사건의 진범을 알고 있다고 주장한다. 하지만 색슨의 아들들은 오로지 필립을 제거하고 필립의 아버지가 찾은 은을 손에 넣는 데 혈안이 돼 있다. 진범은 따로 있다는 클레이튼과 필립의 주장은 받아들여지지 않고, 결국 색슨의 아들들과 클레이튼, 그리고 필립의 운명을 결정할 최후의 총격전이 벌어진다.

An outspoken boy and a gunfighter-pimp save a drifter's life from hanging. The boy's uncle dies, leaving a house and some dry, useless land to the boy. The dying uncle has obtained the drifter's promise to help the boy get what is his. Meanwhile the gunfighter has decided that the drifter should marry his daughter after being with her previously. The two get into a series of brawls and shoot-outs until they arrive in the town and find the boy's inheritance -which turns out not to be as useless as it first appears.

프랭크가 보낸 세명의 총잡이가 기차역에서 누군가를 기다린다. 드디어 그들이 기다리던 한 남자가 하모니카를 불며 기차역에 도착하고, 그들 세 총잡이는 모두 이름 없는 그 남자의 총에 쓰러진다. 한편, 프랭크와 그 부하들은 아일랜드 출신인 맥베인 일가를 잔인하게 살해하는데, 뉴올리언즈에서 이제 막 도착한 맥베인의 새 아내 질로서는 황망할 수밖에 없다. 두 사람은 한달 전 이미 결혼을 한 상태였다. 다시 뉴올리언즈로 돌아가려던 질은 마음을 고쳐먹고 맥베인과 아이들의 시체만 있는 그 집에서 혼자 생활을 시작한다.

네바다의 눈덮인 산맥, 물산이 핍절한 산골 주민들은 고육지책으로 강도떼가 된다. 그들을 없애려고 바운티 헌터들이 그들을 찾아 온다. 산골 주민들은 킬러를 고용한다. 그 중간에서 보안관은 이도저도 안된다. 그리고 갈들이 폭발하고 사람들은 떼거지로 죽는다. 그리고 살아남는 자는 살아남을 이유가 없는 사람들이다. 서부극 사상, 유일하게 뿌연 먼지대신 하얀 눈벌만 잔뜩 나오는 영화. 배경부터 범상치 않은 것처럼 이 영화는 모든 서부극의 틀을 부숴버리고 결말마저 뒤틀린 채 끝나버린다. 이 영화의 결말은 일반 영화에서도 찾아보기 힘든 부류이다. 이 삐딱하고 냉소적인 시선은 주인공들에게서도 나타난다. 아무리 봐도 악당인 클라우스 킨스키와, 선역이라지만 아무런 말도 없는 사일런스 장 루이 트렝티냥의 대결은 기이한 대결로 시작해서 기이한 대결로 끝난다. 아마 개봉당시에도 말이 많았는지 아예 얼터 엔딩이 따로 존재할 정도였다. 출처: https://canicula.tistory.com/1479 [荊軻宿]
