This project, co-created by the ever imaginative Guy Maddin, is a visual discourse on the impact of loss within film. All the sequences pay homage to lost silent films from the early day of cinema. Seances is nostalgic but it is also frequently hilarious. Part of the joy and sadness of Seances is that many possible narratives are created but they can be only viewed once before they disappear forever.

Manipulated by their father, the kids go along with the scenario, taking it as a game. The film has as background the turbulence of 1968, with all its left-wing political implications. As in the director's previous film (Vieux fusil (The Old Gun), the gun also has multiple purposes here. Literally speaking, it is the instrument of crime; metaphorically, it is the force that would liberate the poor victim from his tragic fate. But the hero is just too violent and emotionally disturbed to evoke one's pity.

Before she can put him back on track and get him out of the drug underworld, the young man is killed while being chased by a narcotics agent. Depressed by his death but not derailed, she finds herself trying to help out a gay user who depended on Bobby for his supply of drugs. She decides to procure some drugs for the desperate addict, and is trapped in the bathroom of a bar - with the drugs - when narcotics agents burst upon the scene. Her boyfriend rushes to help her but is killed by an agent who shoots first and thinks later. The barmaid does not face a very optimistic future as the narc arrests her - but releases a parish minister who had been helping her find a source for the drugs.

프랑스의 한 작은 마을 띠에르의 초등학교에는 장난꾸러기 형제(Mathieu Deluca: 끌로디오 데루카 분 / Franck: 프랭크 델루카 분), 그리고 친구의 엄마를 흠모하는 성숙한 소년(데무소) 외에 수많은 천덕꾸러기, 장난꾸러기들이 모여있다. 이들은 수업시간에 딴 짓하고, 졸고, 예습 복습 안 해오고, 말썽피울 궁리만 한다. 그뿐만이 아니라 용돈을 벌기 위해 친구의 머릴 쥐 뜯어먹은 듯이 깍아 놓는가 하면 장난감을 훔쳐 친구들에게 나눠주는 등 천방지축이다. 그러다 이 학교에 말이 없고, 베일에 싸인 듯 한 아이 르크르가 들어온다. 르크르는 적응을 못하고 불량학생처럼 밖으로만 맴돈다. 그러던 어느 날 학교에서 신체검사할 기회가 생기는데, 르크르는 이에 거부감을 나타낸다. 억지로 옷을 벗겨 신체를 검살한 결과 부모로부터 학대를 받았음이 밝혀지게 된다.

프랑스 니스에 자리한 라 빅토린느 스튜디오에서는 영화감독 페랑(프랑수아 트뤼포 자신)이 '파멜라를 찾아서'를 촬영중이다. 시아버지와 아들의 약혼녀가 그만 불륜의 사랑에 빠지자 아들이 아버지를 눈오는 저녁에 총으로 쏴 죽인다는 내용의 비극이다. 배우들과 스태프들이 모여들고, 할리우드에서 스타 쥴리(재클린 비셋 분)가 비행기를 타고 와 합류한다. 감독 페랑은 한편의 영화를 만들기 위해 수단 방법을 가리지 않는다. 연민도 없고, 자비도 없다. 밤마다 영화관에 붙어있는 오슨 웰즈의 스틸 사진을 훔치는 꿈에 시달리며, 매일 전쟁터에 나서는 기분으로 현장에 나간다고 독백한다. 쥴리는 정신병을 앓는 도중 유부남을 가로챈 노이로제 환자이며, 상대역 주연인 알퐁스(장 피에르 레오 분)는 세상에 사랑밖에 없으며 여자는 신비한 존재라고 떠벌리고 다니다가 실연당한다. 시아버지 역의 알렉상드르(장 피에르 오몽 분)은 영화에서 은퇴할 생각을 하다가 교통사고로 죽고, 시어머니 역의 세브린느(발렌티나 코르테스 분)는 왕년의 인기에 연연하며 알코올중독에 빠져 있다. 페랑 감독은 촬영일수를 단축해가며 악전고투 끝에 영화를 완성하고, 한여름을 함께 보낸 이들은 서로 다른 영화를 찍기 위해 뿔뿔이 흩어진다.

In 1798, a feral boy is discovered outside the town of Aveyron, France. Diagnosed as mentally impaired, he is relegated to an asylum. A young doctor named Jean Itard becomes convinced that the boy has normal mental capacity, but that his development was hindered by lack of contact with society.
