W.H. 'Harry' Derwent Blacker
In a small town in the 1950's a repertory company meets on Monday morning to start rehearsing the following week's play. This is a ghastly thing written by the aunt of one of the theatre's directors. The producer doesn't try to hide his annoyance about it, and is further exercised when the authoress herself arrives to help. The cast have to try and sort out real-life problems that keep intruding as they wrestle with the play's dire dialogue.
The Brother
1차 대전이 발발했을 무렵 독일군 주둔 동아프리카 원주민 마을. '아프리카의 여왕'이란 거의 폐선 지경의 발동선 선장 찰리(험프리 보가트 분)는 늘 술에 찌들어 사는 한심한 인간. 반면 이 동네에 하나뿐인 백인 여자 로즈(캐더린 헵번 분)는 깐깐하기가 보통이 넘는 도덕주의자. 로즈의 오빠가 독일군 때문에 죽고 원주민들이 군에 동원되어 나가자 로즈와 찰리도 피난을 떠난다. 이때부터 조신한 여자 로즈의 대담무쌍한 변화가 시작된다. 배의 키를 잡은 그녀는 무시무시한 속도로 독일군 요새 앞을 관통시키는가 하면, 독일의 모함 '루이자호'를 격침(?) 시킬 어뢰를 만들려고 한다.
Elmer Almayer
윌렘스는 싱가폴에서 하딕이라는 사업가의 매니저로 일하고 있다. 하지만 사실 그는 배운 것이라고는 남의 것을 이용해 이득을 챙기는 것뿐인 야망에 찬 사기꾼이다. 영화는 하딕이 윌렘스의 계획을 눈치채고 그를 경찰에 넘기려 하면서 시작된다. 때마침 링가드 선장의 배가 항구에 도착한다. 링가드 선장은 갈 곳 없는 윌렘스를 키운, 이 지역에서 존경받고 인정받는 덕망높은 사람이다. 윌렘스는 자살을 가장, 항구를 떠나는 링가드의 배에 접근해 그의 배를 타고 자유를 찾아 떠난다. 배는 보잘것없는 한 원주민 부락에 도착한다. 이 마을은 링가드 선장덕분에 살기 좋아진 마을로 아직 문명의 혜택을 받지 못한 곳이다. 링가드 선장은 그 원주민 부락에 살고 있는 자신의 양녀 부부내외에게 윌렘스를 부탁하고 다시 항해를 떠난다. 윌렘스는 자신의 죄 때문에 싱가폴에 돌아 갈 수 없어 어쩔 수 없이 링가드선장이 주문대로 원주민 마을에 남는다. 하지만 링가드가 단조로운 비문명화된 세계에서 적용할 리가 없다. 그러던 중 윌렘스는 원주민 부락의 추장의 딸을 사랑하게 되고 원주민과 영국인과의 알력다툼에 끼여들게 된다. 이곳 원주민들은 발전에 장애가 되는 지형적인 조건을 개선하고 싶었지만 링가드 선장의 반대로 계획이 수포로 돌아가자 그들은 윌렘스의 존재를 이용해 그 계획을 실현해 보려고 한다.

In debtor's prison, Stuart is rescued by friends from happier times, and achieves a comeback in British music halls shortly before his death.
