14살의 매리 조르다노(Mary Giordano: 알리시아 실버스톤 분)는 어릴 적부터 유난히 탐정놀이를 좋아하는 소녀. 어느날 그녀의 학급친구 캐슬린이 해변에서 살해된 시체로 발견되는데, 매리는 즐겨 읽는 '트루 크라임'이라는 범죄 전문 잡지에서도 본적이 없는 특이한 수법에 목격자도 용의자도 없는 이번 살인 사건을 혼자 몰래 조사하기로 한다. 본능적으로 매리는 서부해안을 따라가며 연쇄적으로 일어나고 있는 십대 소년 살해 사건들과 이동 거리 축제 사이에 연관성이 있을 것으로 추측, 수사를 해나간다. 수사 과정에서 매리는 젊고 자신만만한 경찰사관생도 토니 캠벨(Tony Campbell: 케빈 딜론 분)을 만나게 되고 그와 협력하여 사건 수사를 진행해 나간다. 매리는 냉정하게 살인자를 찾아나가면서 한편으론 사춘기의 열정에 사로잡혀 토니에 대해 첫사랑의 감정을 느끼게 된다. 드디어 결정적인 증거를 잡는 순간, 매리는 공포에 질리고 만다. 결정적인 살인자의 증거물이 바로 토니의 아파트에서 발견된 것이다. 이제 매리는 첫사랑의 대상인 토니가 살인범임을 입증해내야만 하는 상황에 놓인 셈인데.

사막 한 가운데로 잭 레롤란드와 그의 애인 헬렌 그리고 그의 아리따운 딸 애슐리는 잭의 친구 글랜 도너와 그의 아들 리치와 함께 고속도로 여행을 하고있었다. 잭의 차가 고장이 나서 잠깐 쉬고 있을 때, 아스팔트 위에 핀 야생화를 보느라고 차소리를 듣지 못한 리치를 최근에 석방된 살인자 클리프와 그의 일행이 거의 칠 뻔한 일이 생긴다. 잠시 후 들른 한 식당에서 잭 일행은 클리프일행과 마주치고 글렌이 클리프에게 사고에 대해 강하게 나무라자 거의 싸움을 일으킬 뻔한다. 이때 클리프는 애슐리에게 눈길을 보내고 있었다. 얼마후 고속도로에서 클리프가 식당에서 망신당한 복수로 창문으로 새를 집어넣고, 몹시 화가난 글렌은 클리프와 카체이스를 벌이다가 폭팔하여 죽고만다. 클리프는 잭일행이 사건을 목격한 것을 두려워하여 리치와 헬렌 그리고 애슐리를 납치하고 친구 톰에게 잭을 죽일 것을 명령한다. 하지만 마음이 약한 톰은 잭을 죽이지 못하고 죽였다고 거짓말을 말한다. 잭은 마을로 찾아가 보안관 월콕스에게 알리나 그는 잭이 몹시 흥분한 상태였기 때문에 수갑을 채워가두고 혼자 클리프를 찾아 나선다. 한편 잭은 먼저 감옥에 들어와 있던 하우져와 함께 탈옥하여 클리프를 뒤쫓고, 클리프는 두려움에 떨고있는 애슐리에게 눈독을 들이며 그와 사랑을 나누면 모두를 풀어주겠다고 협상을 제기한다. 클리프의 형인 하우져에 의해 클리프는 어렸을때 자신의 부모를 살해한 극악범으로 밝혀지고 하우져가 인질들을 풀어주려하자 클리프는 그를 죽이고만다. 한편 애슐리는 자기를 희생해서 모두를 풀어주기로 결심하고, 마침 들이닥친 잭은 자신이 본 광경에 절규한다. 클리프와 톰은총에 맞은채 애슐리를 데리고 도주하고, 잭은 헬렌과 리치를 풀어준다. 가족을 지키기 위한 잭의 분노는 한계에 도달하고 사막에선 다시 한번 카 체이스가 벌어지는데.

Lucile Fray was diagnosed with cancer in 1952 and wanted to find suitable homes for her ten children, since she felt her husband could not properly care for them. Prior to her death, she succeeded. The film was directed by John Erman, written by Michael Bortman, and starred Ann-Margret in her first television film. It was originally broadcast on American Broadcasting Company. The same evening as its original broadcast, February 14, 1983, the children of Lucile Fray appeared on That's Incredible!, an ABC program.
