The film follows the story of Sugi Toranosuke, a ronin, who returns to his home town of Edo many years after his attempted suicide as a sickly child. Rescued and adopted by a master swordsman, he has grown into a master swordsman and a very kind gentleman. The time is around 1868 the year that the nails were finally put into the coffin containing the feudal system that nurtured and sustained the samurai. Sugi is confused and unsure about what is happening but his teacher wants him out of the chaos of the multiple power struggles between the various clans.

오가미 이토는 한때 누구도 당해내지 못하는 최고의 검술 실력을 자랑했지만, 지금은 반역자의 누명을 쓰고 야기유 가문에게 쫓기고 있는 신세다. 그것도 어린 아들을 동반한 채. 두 당 500냥을 받으며 비정한 자객의 삶을 살아가는 그에게 어느날, 아와 지방으로부터 암살 의뢰가 들어온다. 옷감에 쪽빛을 내는 비법으로 고소득을 올리고 있는 아와 지방. 막부는 이 아와 지방의 염료 수익에 눈독을 들여 그들의 이익을 착취하려고 한다. 그리하여 막부는 쪽의 재배 비결을 알고 있는 아와의 명주 마쿠야를 납치할 요량으로 무사 삼인방 벤, 덴, 라이를 보낸다. 형제로 구성된 이 삼인방은 가공할만한 검술 실력을 자랑하고 있어 천하에 두려울 것이 없는 야기유 일가조차도 맞서기를 주저할 정도로 흉폭하고 잔혹하기 짝이 없는 이들이다. 그리고 아와 지방으로부터 의뢰를 받은 비운의 검객, 이토가 바로 이 삼형제의 마쿠야를 없애야 하는 것이다. 그러나 이토 역시 야기유의 추적을 받고 있기 때문에 삼형제를 대적하기 앞서 야기유의 닌자를 따돌려야하는 위기에 놓인다.

An abandoned temple in the mountains outside of the old capital city of Kyoto is the scene of a fated meeting between a traveling priest, two women, and a vicious killer. Bloody violence erupts whenever strangers approach the temple. Can the traveling priest bring his belief in the Buddha and rid the three temple residents of the devils that hold their souls?

Zatoichi is forced to kill a young man who owes a debt to a yakuza boss. Moments later, his sister Osode arrives with the money she earned (prostituting herself) to pay his debts. The bosses true motives are revealed and he attempts to steal Osode even though the debt is paid. Zatoichi realizes his grievous error and protects the girl from the gang. Osode and Zatoichi are caught in a dilemma as she must rely on her brother's killer for protection and Zatoichi wrestles with the injustice he has caused.

The film portrays a satirical view of today's heartless money-oriented society.

Ichi is staying at an inn when a woman dies. Her dying wish is that Ichi take her son to his father, an artist living in a nearby town. After arriving in the town, Ichi finds out that the father has been forced by a local boss to create illegal pornography to pay off his gambling debts. Ichi makes it his mission to save tha man and reunite the family, even though it brings him into conflict with a samurai he sort of befriended on his way to the town.

In the 19th century Edo period, sisters Oshizu and Otaka have sacrificed their personal happiness to work and care for their ailing father. Otaka falls in love, but can’t accept a marriage proposal since her older sister needs to marry first. When Oshizu learns of this decision, she takes matters in her own hands.

But they do not reckon on the father's reaction to their arrival, nor on their own growing feelings for the child.

Wandering samurai Nemuri Kyoshiro (Raizô Ichikawa) finds a bulls-eye on his back after befriending the shogunate's tightfisted financial adviser, Asahina, who's earned the wrath of the shogun's self-indulgent daughter for cutting off her allowance. An Indian prince leaves his world of comfort and riches behind to wander and meditate for six years in search of spiritual enlightenment. Siddartha (Cojoin Hong) turns his back on the old religion when people are starving needlessly and holy rituals include human sacrifices. During his meditations, he is tempted by erotic dancing women, demons, and the evil machinations of his criminal cousin. Devastate to attain the spiritual perfection and become the Buddha. He travels to convert followers by his kindness and wisdom, gaining a multitude of believers when he stops an elephant from crushing a local priest. Buddha of course goes on to become one of the great religious leaders of the world.

The sequel to Daibosatsu tôge (1960) and the second of the trilogy follows the adventures of Ryunosuke Tsukue after he is blinded.

The Dai-bosatsu toge trilogy is based on Kaizan Nakazatos unfinished long series of novels (41 books, written from 1913 to 1941). Set in the last period of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Daibosatsu Toge tells the story of Tsuke Ryunosuke, a nihilistic swordmaster who doesn't hesitate to kill anyone, bad or good.

Set in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), this tragic love story takes its cue from a celebrated historical case tried by magistrate Tadasuke Ooka, whose shrewd legal decisions became the stuff of legend. Okuma Shirokoya, the daughter of a lumber merchant in Edo (today’s Tokyo), embarked on an affair and was executed after conspiring with her maid to murder her husband.
