Accused and convicted of gross indecency, he was imprisoned for two years and subjected to hard labor. Once free, he abandons England to live in France, where he will spend his last years, haunted by memories of the past, poverty and immense sadness.

Back from the hospital where he has been treated after a heart attack, Lorenzo is on his way upstairs to his top-floor apartment in Naples when he meets Michela. The charming young woman, who has just moved to the facing apartment, has forgotten her keys and finds herself locked out. Once upon a time in post-war Rome: 13-year old Aurora, a gifted pianist, is the daughter of Valerio, a brilliant conductor. With the intention of actually improving the lives of his pupils, rather than just sedating them, Nello encourages them to expand their individual abilities and explore the wider world around them although, regardless of intention, there is sometimes a price to pushing boundaries too quickly.

영화는 마치 한 장면의 꿈처럼 약간 정신이 이상한 샐비니의 일상을 따라간다. 샐비니는 마을 근처 숲에서 창문으로 한 여성을 훔쳐보는 남자들을 쳐다본다. 여성은 남자들을 위해 스트립쇼를 하고, 샐비니는 이를 보며 그의 할머니에 대한 기억을 떠올린다.
