샌프란시스코에 내리는 비에 섞여 외계 식물의 씨가 떨어지고, 이 씨들이 분홍색의 예쁜 꽃을 피우는 꽃식물로 자라나 사람들의 몸을 복제하기 시작한다. 이 외계식물은 사람이 잠든 사이에 그 몸은 물론 정신과 기억까지 완전하게 복제하여, 복제 당한 사람과 똑같이 생겼으나 사실은 전혀 다른 존재인 복제인을 만들어낸다. 샌프란시스코 공중위생부에 근무하는 엘리자베스도 퇴근 길에 그 꽃 한 송이를 따들고 들어와 침실 꽃병에 꽂은 것이 화근이 되어 그날밤 그녀의 남편 제프리가 복제 당한다.
