소련인 악사가 미국으로 망명한 후 낯선 생활 방식에 적응해 가는 과정을 담은 코미디물로 공산주의와 자유주의 체제가 가진 각각의 모순을 자연스럽게 표현하고 있다. 소련 국립서커스단에서 색소폰을 연주하는 블라디미르(로빈 윌리엄스)는 미국 순회 공연을 준비하고 있다. 공연일이 임박해 오자 KGB는 미국에 간 단원들이 소련에 반감을 품게 될 것을 염려해 감시의 고삐를 조인다. 안 그래도 블라디미르는 툭하면 체제비판적인 언행을 일삼는 할아버지 때문에 KGB의 눈총을 받아온 터였다. 드디어 단원들은 뉴욕에 도착하고, 이제껏 경험해보지 못한 자유와 풍요로움을 맛 본 블라디미르는 귀국 직전 엉겁결에 망명을 요청하게 된다. 블라디미르는 이민자들과 백화점 점원인 루치아의 도움으로 망명에 성공하고 뉴욕에 정착한다. 하지만 미국 생활은 생각만큼 만만치가 않았다. 준비 없이 경쟁 사회에 내던져진 블라디미르는 일자리를 구하는 데도 애를 먹고, 할아버지의 부음이 전해지면서 향수병에 시달리게 된다. 게다가 강도들에게 돈까지 털리게 되자 그는 자신이 기대한 아메리칸 드림이 환상이었음을 깨닫는다.

A Soviet cruise ship "Evgeni Onegin" is carrying cages with tigers and lions for a Soviet Circus. One loose monkey unlocks all cages, letting the tigers and lions out. Poor passengers and crew have no place to run. The captain abandons his post out of fear, and the monkey takes over the captain's post. The ship gets under total control by the tigers and lions. Only one lady is standing up to the challenge. Her name is Marianna, she loves animals, and she takes the situation under control.

Senor Quexana has read so many books on chivalry that he believes that he is the knight Don Quixote de la Mancha. So Don Quixote sets off on his horse, accompanied by his squire Sancho Panza on a mule, to perform valiant deeds. They mistakenly save the Lady Altisidora who is so amused that she invites them to visit the Duke to provide some merriment at court. Among other deeds, Don Quixote frees some prisoners, who then turn upon him, and Don Quixote attacks a windmill that he imagines is a monstrous wizard.
