거만하고 이기적인 나폴리의 사업가 도미니코(마르첼로 마스트로얀니 분)는 소문난 바람둥이로 필루메나라는 열일곱살의 매춘부(소피아 로렌 분)에게 빠져 그녀를 매춘굴에서 빼내 그가 경영하는 제과점의 종업원으로 일하도록 일자리를 마련해 준다. 그러나 도미니코는 필루메나와 결혼을 할 만큼 사랑하는 것은 아니었고, 단지 하인처럼 소유하거나, 밤의 연인으로만 곁에 두고 싶어한다. 20여 년이 흐르도록 관계를 유지해오던 두 사람은 그러나 도미니코가 젊은 여공과 사랑에 빠져 결혼하려 하면서 흔들리기 시작한다. 할 수 없이 필루메나는 꾀를 발휘해 자신이 병에 걸려 곧 죽을 것처럼 남자를 속여서 도미니코가 자신의 잘못을 뉘우치도록 만든 뒤 결혼에 성공하게 된다...

첫 번째 에피소드인 "나폴리의 아델리나"는 놀고 먹으면서 교도소나 들락거리는 남자와 결혼한 아델리나가 남편을 먹여 살리기 위해 밀수입 담배를 판매하는 내용을 다루고 있다. 아델리나는 수사관들이 수사망을 좁혀올 때마다 임신을 하여 체포의 위기를 모면한다. 1960년대 이탈리아에서는 임신한 여성을 체포하는 것을 법으로 금지하고 있었기 때문. 덕분에 일곱명의 아이들을 갖게 되었지만 더 이상 아이를 낳을 기력이 없는 남편으로 인해 아델리나는 위기에 처하게 된다. 할 수 없이 아델리나는 임신한 것처럼 배를 불룩하게 위장해 위기를 모면해 보려고 하지만 그녀를 체포하기 위해 혈안이 되어 있는 수사관들이 가만있을리 없다. 두 번째 에피소드인 "안나"는 기업가의 응석받이 아내의 이야기를 담고 있다. 물질적으로는 풍요로웠지만 얽매인 듯한 생활에 신물이 난 안나는 남편의 구속에서 벗어나고 싶은 욕망에 시달리고, 그 욕망은 스포츠카를 부수는 것으로 표출된다. 세 번째 에피소드인 "마라"는 로마에서 고급 콜걸 생활을 하던 마라가 순진한 신학도를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 되지만 볼로냐에서 온 마라의 기둥서방으로 인해 신학도가 위험에 처하게 될까봐 그를 져버린다는 내용을 담고 있다.

Michele, a young mechanic, is in love with Angela Antonia, beautiful but capricious: the girl's father, once he learns of the relationship, has him fired from the place where he works and is forced to move to Naples. He asks for hospitality from his aunt Carmela, concierge in a building, but she has no vacancies and arranges him as Donna Tecla, the owner of a pension who, having three young daughters eager to get married, hopes to arrange at least one. But the three girls are not the best of beauty and Michele, gifted with a beautiful voice, agrees to sing in a club on behalf of an impresario who becomes his friend.

The fake private detective Mike Spillone is hired by two old ladies to find out if Brigitte, the wife of their nephew Otello Bellomo, has a lover. Brigitte is a physician but the two aunts are unaware of the fact. While investigating, Mike and his assistant Johnny discover Brigitte with a prospective patient, the marquis De Vitti who was shot by the husband of the woman he tried to seduce. Afterwards Spillone finds her with her husband who he believes to be her lover.

Maria, is a girl raised by the loving care of a poor couple but without knowing anything about her real parents. She is in love with Giorgio, a boy from a good family, who however has also aroused the interest of the intriguing Edvige who frequents bad company including jealous Roberto.

Nando Moriconi is a young Italian living in the early '50s Roma. He is completely crazy for everything that comes from the States. He tries to speak American-English (the most funny ever), to wear like he thinks Americans do, to walk like John Wayne, trying to eat cornflakes with ketchup... His life is a complete parody of the real American way of life, which he couldn't ever get.

The relationships between a veteran marshal, his bride-to-be, a rookie and his fiancée are severely tested when the young carabiniere is temporarily sent to a distant town.

Tribute to Naples, where director De Sica spent his first years, this is a collection of six Napolitean episodes : a clown exploited by a gangster ; an inconstant pizza seller (Sofia) loosing her husband's ring ; the funeral of a dead child ; the gambler Count Prospero B. defeated by a kid ; the unexpected and unusual wedding of Teresa, a prostitute ; the "professor" Ersilio Micci, a "wisdom seller".

Felice Sciosciammocca, the mayor of Roccasecca, sends his nephew Ciccillo to Naples so that he will become a good doctor.

막달레나는 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 만큼 어여쁜 딸 마리아를 특별하게 키우고 싶어한다. 때마침 아역 배우를 뽑는 오디션이 열리고, 막달레나는 마리아를 참가시키기 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는다. 결국, 마리아는 오디션을 통과하고, 촬영이 시작된다. 그런데 어린 마리아가 스태프들 사이에서 울고 있는 모습을 보게 된 막달레나는 무언가 크게 잘못되었음을 깨닫는다.
