Um Herói de Verdade (1978)

Jake Vig (Edward Burns) é um polido trapaceiro que, junto com seus asseclas, acabou de roubar milhares de dólares do contador Lionel Dolby (Leland Orser). Tudo parece ter dado certo, mas quando o contador e um de seus comparsas aparecem mortos Jake descobre que na verdade o dinheiro roubado pertencia ao excêntrico chefão do crime organizado Winston King (Dustin Hoffman). Jake então marca um encontro com King para acertar as coisas e recebe a missão de dar um golpe de cinco milhões de dólares em Morgan Price (Robert Forster), um banqueiro com ligações com a máfia. Se juntam ao bando Lupus (Franky G), homem de confiança de King, e Lily (Rachel Weisz), uma batedora de carteiras por quem Jake se apaixona. Eles são perseguidos de perto pelo incansável agente do FBI Gunther Butan (Andy Garcia), um antigo inimigo de Jake.

In the Kerepesi Street cemetery, three grave diggers contemplate the fate of the world, then they step out of this role and in a sequence of episodes they play the typical figures of contemporary Hungarian reality, the fat cat, the swashbuckler, the victim, underworld chieftains, and present little absurd dramas of love, marriage, friendship, public order and legal safety. The author and the film director walk among them all the time, contemplating, laughing at their plays. The stories starting from the graveyard and returning there warn of the inevitability of death. The author and the director (Gyula Hernádi and Miklós Jancsó) wisely make friends with death.
