O naviio está muito fundo para os mergulhadores e a única solução é trazê-lo de volta à superfície. Este filme alemão pouco conhecido remete à verdadeira história do navio oceânico britânico que encontrou um destino trágico. Ernst Fritz Fürbringer interpreta o presidente da White Star Line, que impensavelmente pressionou o capitão do Titanic (Otto Wernicke) para fazer o cruzamento mais rápido possível para Nova York. Curiosamente, o diretor Herbert Selpin foi preso pela Gestapo durante a produção deste filme (morrendo estranhamente alguns dias depois) e o Ministro da Propaganda nazista, Joseph Goebbels, proibiu sua exibição por suas cenas de pânico e terror. Tirando o fato de que, na noite anterior a sua estreia, o cinema onde o filme seria exibido sofreu um ataque aéreo. Sob as ordens de Selpin, o negativo do filme e as cópias existentes foram escondidos em um galpão secreto. Acreditou-se que o filme estava perdido, até que, em 1949, o negativo foi misteriosamente encontrado.
Conta a história do navio RMS Titanic, o maior, mais veloz, mais luxuoso e mais seguro transatlântico do mundo, que teria como percurso sair de Southampton, na Inglaterra, e ir para Nova York, nos Estados Unidos. Mas após quatro noites navegando pelo oceano, o navio cruza tragicamente com um gigantesco iceberg, vitimando 1.500 passageiros, sendo que pouco mais de 700 sobreviveram.
1912. Julia Sturges (Barbara Stanwyck), uma socialite, embarca no Titanic acompanhada pelos filhos, Annette (Audrey Dalton) e Norman (Harper Carter), e deixa para trás o marido, Richard Ward Sturges (Clifton Webb). When her parents and fiancé are lost in the Titanic disaster, young Edwina Winfield shoulders the responsibility of raising her three younger siblings and taking over the reins at her father's newspaper. Although she has no shortage of new would-be suitors, the memory of her lost love continues to haunt her, so she focuses instead on providing a stable home for the children, rather than marrying. But her forcefulness alienates some of the kids, who have plans of their own and rebel against her. Horty, a French foundry worker, wins a contest and is sent to see the sailing of the Titanic.
