1912년, 최대 호화 여객선 타이타닉 호가 아메리카를 연결하는 처녀 항해에 나선다. 상류층인 스터니 부인(Julia Sturges: 바브라 스탠 위크 분)은 남편인 리차드(Richard Ward Sturges: 클리프톤 웨브 분)와의 불화로 아네트(Annette: 오드리 달튼 분)와 아들을 데리고, 타이타닉호에 승선한다. 아들을 따라온 리차드는 가족들과 만나지만 아내는 냉담하기만 하다. 한편 타이타닉의 승무원인 기프 로저스(Giff Rogers: 로버트 와그너 분)는 승선하는 아네트를 보고 첫눈에 반한다. 부모님의 불화로 마음을 둘곳 없던 아네트 역시 그의 순수한 마음에 이끌려, 결국 이들은 신분의 차이를 넘어선 사랑에 빠진다. 한편, 뉴 펀들랜드 남방에 가까워질 무렵, 빙산의 위험을 알리는 여러번의 경고가 타이타닉 호에 전달된다. 그러나 선장은 이 경고를 무시하고 속력을 줄이지 않은 채 항해를 계속한다. 그 결과 출항한지 4일만에 타이타닉은 빙산과 부딪혀 침몰하기 시작한다.

When her parents and fiancé are lost in the Titanic disaster, young Edwina Winfield shoulders the responsibility of raising her three younger siblings and taking over the reins at her father's newspaper. But her forcefulness alienates some of the kids, who have plans of their own and rebel against her. Can she hold her fractured family together, and will she ever overcome her ghosts to shake herself out of martyrdom and have a real life of her own?
Horty, a French foundry worker, wins a contest and is sent to see the sailing of the Titanic. In England, Marie, saying she is a chambermaid on the Titanic and cannot get a room, asks to share his room. They do, chastely; when he awakens, she is gone, but he sees her at the sailing and gets a photo of her. When he returns home, he suspects that his wife Zoe has been sleeping with Simeon, the foundry owner. Horty goes to the bar, where his friends get him drunk and he starts telling an erotic fantasy of what happened with him and Marie, drawing a larger audience each night.

The buoyant Molly Brown has survived the first crisis of her life—a flood. Sixteen years later she sets out to make her way in the world. She assures the Leadville saloon keeper that she can sing and play the piano, and learns quickly. Soon she marries Johnny Brown, who in a few years will be able to replace the original cigar wrapper wedding ring with a replica in gold and gemstones. The Browns head for Europe and bring a few crowned heads back to Denver for a party that turns into a ballroom brawl. Molly goes to Europe alone, returning on the Titanic. She didn't survive a flood as a baby for the story to end here.
