Sinopse

Na França pré-revolucionária, a rainha Maria Antonieta pede a seu primo Noel, marquês de Maynes, que descubra a identidade de Marcus Brutus, um panfleteiro que ataca com seus folhetos a decadente aristocracia. Logo se descobre que ele é Philippe de Valmorin, grande amigo do aventureiro André Moreau. Este tenta ajudá-lo a fugir mas não consegue impedir que Philippe seja morto pelo marquês em um duelo de floretes. Moreau nada pudera fazer, pois o marquês era tido então como o melhor espadachim da França. Só lhe resta fugir, se escondendo em uma companhia teatral, sob a máscara ridícula do cômico Scaramouche. Mas Moreau jurou vingança e se dedica a aperfeiçoar sua esgrima a fim de desafiar o marquês para um duelo mortal.
