Three old acquaintances debate different interpretations of the Koran, Christian sects, their lives, and life after death in a tiny, cramped neighborhood barber shop.

Studying engineering and dreaming to go abroad with the Erasmus project to leave behind his small town, Ali is going through a period of self-exploration, asking questions about life. His quiet life is stirred up upon his crush to Gülce, a singer at a folk music cafe. Gülce is a nursing student and to get by, she works as a caregiver to a lonely, elder man in one of the older neighbourhoods of the town. As Ali gets to know Gülce, he becomes involved in the old man’s story too. Ali goes on his search on the threshold of this encounter, asking a question to which he wouldn’t find an answer to: is any happiness possible?

16-year-old Elene is a Georgian illegal immigrant who works at a tea plantation in Turkey. Feeling threatened by various encounters, she tries to be invisible in this foreign land. But it is not as easy as she thinks.

Nesrin and Hatun are two Kurdish cleaning women living in Istanbul. While Nesrin tries to survive with her little daughter, trying to understand why her husband left her, Hatun dreams of buying a house in the district where they clean.

Yusuf (Bora Altas) é um garoto turco que está aprendendo a ler e a escrever. Nas horas vagas ele ajuda o pai, um apicultor que guarda as colmeias nos galhos mais altos de uma misteriosa floresta. Até que um dia seu pai parte para um local mais distante, já que perto de casa as abelhas repentinamente sumiram. A demora do pai em retornar causa estranheza em Yusuf e sua mãe.

Mithat coleciona jornais no seu apartamento em Istambul. Os outros inquilinos o ridicularizam, e ele leva uma vida solitária. Ao saber que o edifício será reformado, ele faz amizade com o zelador Ali, outro solitário, que o ajuda a salvar sua coleção. Sem querer, um acaba mudando o destino do outro.

Servet, um homem de negócios na Turquia, candidato à eleição local, conduz sozinho numa estrada deserta. É noite, está com sono, e em consequência disso, atropela acidental e mortalmente um desconhecido. Decide fugir, mas a matrícula do seu carro é anotada por uma testemunha. Para prevenir um escândalo, decide dizer que era o seu motorista, Eyup, quem conduzia o carro naquele instante, e propõe ao seu funcionário confessar o crime em troca de uma quantia avultada em dinheiro. O motorista aceita e é condenado a 8 meses de prisão. Na sua ausência, a sua mulher envolve-se amorosamente com o empresário.

A diferença de idade entre Isa, professor universitário, e Bahar, sua jovem mulher que trabalha na televisão, acaba por atrapalhar seu relacionamento, ainda mais porque Isa está envolvido com sua tese. Isa passa a se comunicar apenas quando não há mais jeito. Bahar vai embora e Isa se volta para sua mulher anterior, Serap. Como o clima e as estações, tudo vai e tudo volta.

Zeynep, Tülin Özen works in a hotel as a housekeeper. But she suffers hell on earth because of her father's behavior. She only talks to Mustafa, 'Engin Dogan' who works in the same hotel and he is interested in Zeynep. She is not interested in Mustafa who is younger than Zeynep, but she is not indifferent to him. While Zeynep is trying to make a bonfire of bad situation, Selçuk, Budak Akalin who lives on the other side of city is a voice technician. He feels guilty after his wife's death. The suitcase which has his wife's dresses changes the Zeynep's destiny.

Uzak/Distant chronicles the numbing loneliness, longing, and isolation in the lives of two men who are consumed by their own problems. Istanbul photographer Mahmut reluctantly receives his relative Yusuf, but the mingling of their lives does little to alleviate their detachment.

This is a movie within a movie, about a director, Muzaffer, who goes back to his hometown to make a film using a cast of local people (based on the director Ceylan's first feature, Kasaba). While Muzaffer is around, his mother complains about simple health problems, his father is in a legal fight against the government for his land, his cousin leaves his job to help Muzaffer who promises to find him work in Istanbul, and his little cousin Ali tries to carry an egg in his pocket for forty days so that he'll get the watch of his dreams. In the meantime, they form the cast for Muzaffer's movie as well.
