Desde que participou da Guerra Fria, o capitão Demi (Ed Harris) sofre com distúrbios que alteram sua percepção da realidade. Mesmo assim, ele é convocado para uma missão secreta, sendo obrigado a deixar sua família e embarcar em um submarino. Logo, seus traumas passados vêm à tona quando Demi é perseguido por um membro da KGB (David Duchovny), que tenta tomar controle do míssil nuclear a bordo da embarcação. Enquanto luta para cumprir tarefa, o capitão descobre que foi escolhido porque seus superiores contavam com o seu fracasso.
