This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man-its founder and headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi--who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity.

Certo dia, voltando da escola, Haru (Chizuru Ikewaki) avista um gato peculiar, que leva consigo, na boca, um pequeno embrulho. Distraído, o gato principia a travessia de uma rua movimentada, mas se atrapalha com o embrulho e não percebe que um automóvel vem à sua direção. Haru corre para salvá-lo, e o faz com êxito. No dia seguinte, fatos estranhos somam-se à rotina da garota, em decorrência da vida que salvou.

O filme é sobre Koro, um filhote de cachorro que foge de sua dona, uma menina chamada Sawako, depois que ela sai para a escola e se esquece de fechar a porta da frente. Koro experimenta algumas aventuras ao redor da cidade, como sendo encontrado por um ciclista local e levado por um casal com duas filhas pequenas e um cão idoso. Esta família cuida de Koro e dar-lhe abrigo até o dia seguinte, quando ele retorna ao seu bairro e se reencontra com Sawako.

Kujiratori tells the story of school children pretending they are building a boat. As imagination replaces reality, they find themselves on the ocean, hunting for a whale. A big, gentle whale appears, accompanies them back to land and plays with them. Then the fantasy ends and the children are back in their class room.

Animated with drawings that are a collage of pop and grotesque. The surrealistic design and the generous viewing experience give the impression that it is a "picture book for adults", but the thoughtful storyline, poetic narration and songs that suddenly appear are pleasantly unrestrained as if the film were aimed at children. However, this unrestrainedness is accompanied by a high degree of perfection, and although it is a flat animation that seems to be the opposite of the latest CG, it gives the impression of possibilities for expression that may even broaden the definition of cinema.

Shizuku é uma estudante que sonha em ser uma escritora e decide, durante o verão, ler vinte livros. Mas, curiosamente, todas as edições que ela pegou na biblioteca já haviam sido lidas por um tal de Seiji Amasawa.

Shirotsugh Lhadatt aspirava juntar-se a marinha e se tornar um piloto de guerra, mas suas notas na escola jamais permitiriam isso. Acabou por resignar-se em juntar a Real Força Espacial, que apesar de ser constituida por oficiais desleixados além de cientistas velhos e alienados, possuia um grande objetivo: enviar o primeiro homem para o espaço sideral. Mas a descrença do governo e falta de financiamento ameaça por fim a Real Força Espacial... até que Shiro - que não destoa da paisagem de desolação e mediocridade - se encontra com uma missionária que renova sua motivação, fazendo-o seguir em frente com o programa espacial. Embora seus proprios sentimentos além de interesses obscuros do governo haverão de colocar dificuldades em seu caminho.
