This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man-its founder and headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi--who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity.

튤립 보육원의 샛별반 아이들이 배를 만들고 고래를 잡기 위해 공상의 넓은 바다로 출항하는 내용을 담고 있습니다. 아이들은 선박의 침수나 폭풍 등의 사고를 이겨내고 마침내 고래를 잡게 됩니다. 아이들은 육지에 온 고래에게 화관을 주고 기념사진을 찍습니다. 그리고 고래는 다시 넓은 바다로 돌아갑니다.

중학교 3학년 시즈쿠는 평소 책을 많이 읽는 소녀. 여름방학, 매번 도서카드에서 먼저 책을 빌려간 세이지란 이름을 발견하고 호기심을 갖는다. 어느 날 지하철 안에서 혼자 탄 고양이를 보게 된다. 신기하게 여긴 시즈쿠는 고양이를 따라가다 골동품 가게에 들어가게 되고, 그곳에서 주인 할아버지와 손자를 보게 된다. 그 손자는 다름 아닌 아마사와 세이지, 사춘기의 두 사람은 점차 서로의 사랑에 대해 알게 된다. 시즈쿠는 바이올린 장인을 자신의 장래로 확실히 정한 세이지를 보면서 자신의 꿈과 미래를 진지하게 고민하게 된다. 그 후 이탈리아 연수를 간 세이지가 돌아올 때 까지 작가가 되고자 도전해 보기로 하는데...
오네아미스 왕국에 평범한 계층으로 태어난 청년 시로츠구. 하늘을 날고 싶었던 시로츠구는 해군 파일럿에 지원하지만 성적 미달로 불합격하게 된다. 제트기 조종사에 대한 꿈을 접은 시로츠구는 대신 우주 비행사가 되기 위해 왕립우주군에 입대한다. 그러나 정작 희망을 갖고 들어간 왕립우주군은 유명무실한 집단으로 인공위성도 날려보지 못한 채 사람들에게 무시만 당한다. 동료 우주 비행사들 역시 무기력함에 빠져 술과 노름으로 시간을 보내고, 시로츠구도 우주 비행사에 대한 꿈을 잊게 된다. 아무런 목적 없이 허무하게 일상의 나날을 보내던 그는 어느 날 우연히 리이크니와의 만남을 계기로 세계 최초의 유인 우주선의 비행사가 되겠다는 희망을 되찾게 된다. 시로츠구의 열의는 무기력했던 우주군 동료들을 움직이고, 제자리를 맴돌던 유인 우주선 발사 계획은 본격적으로 진행된다. 하지만 국가 간의 음모에 의해 우주를 향한 시로츠구와 동료들의 도전은 위기를 맞게 된다.
