Steel Town (1952)

Unos amigos de un pequeño pueblo industrial acuden a la llamada del ejército para combatir en la guerra del Vietnam. Michael Cimino divide el film en dos partes: en la primera nos hace partícipes de la humilde vida de los personajes, de sus sueños, juergas y esperanzas; en la segunda nos muestra con dureza los efectos de la guerra y sus penosas consecuencias.

El cierre de la fábrica de acero de Yorkshire deja sin trabajo a casi toda la población masculina. Gaz, uno de los obreros afectados, perderá el derecho de ver a su hijo si no consigue dinero para pagar la pensión de manutención familiar a su mujer. En medio de la desesperación, se le ocurre una idea, a primera vista disparatada, y se la plantea a los amigos que están en la misma situación: organizar un espectáculo de strip-tease.

Stefan Djordjevic (Tom Cruise) vive en una ciudad industrial donde la vida gira en torno a dos cosas: la acería y el fútbol americano. Es titular del equipo de futbol del instituto, y su gran sueño es conseguir una beca para ir a la universidad a estudiar ingeniería.

A very topical early talkie from low-budget company Columbia Pictures, Wall Street starred Ralph Ince, brother of producer Thomas H. Ince, as Roller McCray, a steelworker turned ruthless tycoon whose tough business methods leads a rival (Philip Strange) to commit suicide. The widow (Aileen Pringle), believing she can ruin Ince by using his own methods, conspires with her husband's former partner (Sam De Grasse), but a strong friendship between Ince and Pringle's young son (Freddie Burke Frederick) changes things dramatically. According to future Three Stooges director Edward Bernds, who worked as a sound mixer on Wall Street, Ince's reaction to his rival's suicidal jump from a window ledge was changed from a sneering "I didn't think he had the guts" to the more respectful "I didn't think he'd do it" due to derisive laughter from the film's crew.

Steve Kostain (Lund), nephew of the owner, begins working at a steel mill to learn the business from the bottom up. He rooms with a steel working family, the McNamaras, and falls for the daughter, "Red" (Sheridan), who is already involved with another steelworker, Jim (Duff.) Although he is at first has a hard time with his co-workers, he eventually wins them over, and also wins the girl.

This drama chronicles the education of a naive, rich young woman who inherits a steel mill. To help her keep it running she unites with a man. Meanwhile two crooks try to destroy her production in order to force her to sell it to them for very little money. They are thwarted at the last moment.

John Dawson loses control of his factory when he is crippled in an accident caused by a rival. Destitute, he travels the country organizing the homeless to help him regain control of his steel mill.

William Reardon, a steel magnate, dies and leaves a strange will. When his spineless and dandified heir and son returns home from living in Paris, he finds "Tons' Walker, a strong and burly steel worker running the company, per his late-father's will request. He also finds that his father's will specifies the Junior will change his name to Bill Hall and work in the family steel mill for a year under the fake name. Walker's job is to make a man out of the son. The son is not overjoyed by this prospect. Neither is Walker.

Tony Buba, a film maker from Braddock, Pennsylvania, tells the story of his hometown's decline (along with the rest of the steel mill towns along the Monongahela River) while he dreams of making higher budget films. The picture documents, in a lighthearted way, the community anxiety and activism that accompanied the failure of the steel industry around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Pavle Pavlovic, a steel worker, openly talks about the issues in the steel factory in a television show. He receives an apartment from the board, takes his statement back, but looses the trust of his colleagues. He starts all over again: in another company he gains new friends, however while facing the criminals who illegally transport workers abroad, he loses his life.
