小さな本屋で働くジョー(オードリー)は、共感主義かぶれ。ひょんな事からファッション雑誌のモデルを依頼される。撮影はパリ。パリには行きたいけれど、モデルなんて……。でも、パリに行けば共感主義の元祖フロストル教授にきっと会える！。雑誌の編集長マギー、カメラマンのディックと共にジョーはパリへ飛び立つ。

ロサンゼルス上空に、突然いくつもの巨大飛行物体が飛来する。そこから発せられる青い光は誘蛾灯のように見たものを引きつけ、飛行物体は集まった人間たちを次々と吸い上げていく。偶然この街に来ていた青年ジャロッドと恋人エレインは、友人宅の高層マンションからこの恐るべき光景を目撃していた。ビルから脱出する計画も失敗に終わり、むなしく救助を待つ彼ら。やがて、ようやく現われた軍が決死の反撃を試みる。

高層ビルで男が墜落死し、現場に急行した刑事ボーデンは、ロザリオを握りしめた死体に違和感を感じつつも、状況から自殺と判断する。ちょうどそのころ、同じビルのエレベーターが突然停止し、閉じ込められた5人の男女が、照明が消えるごとに1人ずつ無残な死を遂げるという奇怪な事態が起きていた。
