奈良県東部の山間にあるグループホームでは、軽度の認知症を患った人たちが介護スタッフたちと共同生活をしている。患者であるしげきには33年前、妻を失った過去がある。一方、新任の介護福祉士、真千子には子どもを亡くしたのを機に、夫と別れた過去があった。最初はしげきが何を考えているか分からない真千子だが、少しずつ彼と心を打ち解け合っていく。真千子はしげきの妻の墓参りに付き添うが、そこで急に天候が悪化する。

The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

人里離れた山間の村。木こりの岸克彦（役所広司）は、早朝から仲間と山林に入り、木々を伐採して生計を立てていた。妻に先立たれ、今は息子の浩一（高良健吾）と2人暮らし。定職に就かずにふらふらしている浩一に、克彦は憤りを覚えていた。妻の三回忌はもうすぐ。ある朝、田舎道を行く克彦は、車が溝にはまって立ち往生している2人を発見する。ゾンビ映画の撮影にやってきた映画監督の田辺幸一（小栗旬）と鳥居（古舘寛治）だった。なりゆきから、2人を撮影現場まで案内することになった克彦は、そのままゾンビのメイクでエキストラ出演する羽目になる。木こり仲間たちから出演をネタにされ、まんざらでもない克彦。撮影途中の映像を見るラッシュ試写に呼ばれた彼は、小さく映る自分のゾンビ姿に思わず苦笑いする。傍らでは幸一が、自分の腕を噛みながら、苦々しい表情でスクリーンを見つめていた。現場では、大勢のスタッフやキャストから質問攻めにあい、頭が混乱して昏倒してしまう幸一。そこへたまたまやってきた克彦は、弁当を食べながら幸一に年齢を尋ねる。彼が25歳だと聞いた克彦は、生い茂る松の木を指さし、“あそこに松が生えてるだろ。あの木が一人前になるのに、ざっと100年はかかるよ。”と告げる。またある日、露天風呂から上がり、克彦と一緒にそばをすすっていた幸一は、父親が買ってきたビデオカメラをきっかけに、映画を撮り始めるようになったことを語る。しかし、実家の旅館を継がなかったことで、父親は後悔しているだろうと。克彦は“後悔なんかしてねえよ。自分の買ってきたカメラが息子の人生を変えたんだ。嬉しくてしょうがねえだろうよ。”と幸一を諭すのだった。やがて克彦は積極的に撮影を手伝うようになり、撮影隊と村人たちとの間に、少しずつ一体感が生まれてゆく。やがて、撮影はいよいよ佳境を迎える……。
