雑誌「LIFE」の写真管理部で働くウォルター・ミティは、思いを寄せる女性と会話もできない臆病者。唯一の特技は妄想することだった。ある日、「LIFE」表紙に使用する写真のネガが見当たらない気付いたウォルターはカメラマンを捜す旅へ出る。ニューヨークからグリーンランド、アイスランド、ヒマラヤへと奇想天外な旅がウォルターの人生を変えていく。
