8日後に市長選を控えたニューヨーク。7年前に警察官を辞め、私立探偵として生計を立てるビリーは、警官辞職の原因となった殺人事件に関する秘密を互いに知る現市長ホステラーから妻の浮気を調べるように依頼される。調べを進めるうちに、浮気相手が市長再選を狙うホステラーの対立候補の右腕であるアンドリュースだったことが判明。やがて、アンドリュースが誰かに殺害される。
