Following the death of the second Tokugawa shogun, it is revealed that he was poisoned by retainers of his son Iemitsu in hopes of gaining him the shogunate despite the stammer and birthmark which undermine his respect. Iemitsu and his brother Tadanaga become bitter rivals for the shogunate, and the land is split into factions, eventually erupting into warfare. Reiko Oshida stars as a young wannabe gangster tough girl, just released from reform school. One of the nuns at Senjuan is Sister Shunko (Michiyo Yasuda). Unlike the usual nun, however, she often goes out to see the world, being of the opinion that nuns should not lead cloistered lives but should see something of modern life. She makes the acquaintance of a young girl named lkuko (Kayo Mikimoto) and saves her from the advances of a gangster named Goro (lchiro Nakatani). In the meantime she turns down several propositions and, in revenge, one of her admirers denounces her to the Mother Superior (Kuniko Miyake). This lady is of liberal views, however, and refuses to do anything about it. Then Shunko is visited by Goro's gang boss who wants lkuko back and says he will blackmail Shunko unless she agrees.

As Japan joins in a political pact with Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto is appointed supreme commander of the Japanese fleet. 橘真一が送られてきた網走刑務所には、青鬼と呼ばれる冷酷無比の刑務所長がいた。青鬼の仕業で独居房に入れられた真一は、隣の独居房にいる瀕死の日系露人と知り合う。男は自分が死んだら代わりに棺桶に入って脱獄するよう言い残す。

新田の表の顔は日本舞踊の師匠だが、裏の顔は凄腕の殺し屋だった。石野組幹部の荒木から、政財界の秘密を握る脱税王の朝倉を暗殺するよう依頼された新田は、朝倉の定宿であるスカイライン・ホテルへ。プールで朝倉の命を狙う新田だったが、日本舞踊の弟子である芸者の秀子の出現により中断を余儀なくされる。ようやく新田は朝倉を始末し荒木との約束場所に到着するが、そこに荒木の姿はなく無人の車が置いてあるだけだった。新田が乗ったその車は、ブレーキが意図的に壊されていた。それは荒木の裏切りを意味していた。

物語始めの舞台は、甲州と江戸。御嶽山奉納の剣術試合で、宇津木文之丞との勝負をゆずらなかった机竜之助は、文之丞の妻だったお浜と夫婦になる。大菩薩峠で、机竜之助に斬られた老人の孫のお松は、七兵衛の世話で厄介になった生け花の師匠のところから、神尾主膳の屋敷へ奉公にあがる。竜之助が組する江戸の浪士組（新徴組の前身）では、近藤勇と芹沢鴨が頭角を顕す。舞台の後半は、清河八郎の暗殺以後、新徴組が新撰組へ、江戸から京都へ移っていく。大菩薩峠と御嶽山奉納試合からの因縁、近藤勇や芹沢鴨の新徴組に身を置いた流れに、文久3年、机竜之助の音無しの剣術は、その在り方が求められていく。

やくざ稼業から手を引き、原爆で打ちのめされた長崎港の再建に着手して規模を拡大した旭統一率いる旭組。それに眼をつけた安井は、縄張りをもぎとろうと悪行の限りを尽くす。そのあくどさに我慢出来なくなった旭組の橘真一は、統一に内緒で殴りこみ、安井に重傷を負わせて刑務所送りになる。まだ17、8才のガキだった。それから数年後、刑期を終え、すっかり立ち直った長崎港の桟橋に降り立った橘真一だが、相も変わらず横暴を極める安井組に、再度の網走づとめを覚悟して、単身殴りこみをかける。

Modern comedy, based on the popular manga.

An early Okamoto yakuza film, though it's not in the Underworld series (along with The Last Gunfight and The Big Boss) despite being alternatively known as "Death of the Boss." While Okamoto did not write this film and took on the project because he was assigned and "just doing [his] job" according to an interview with Chris Desjardins in Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film, he did express a general excitement about working in action cinema (which shows through in this film's energy.)

High-class night club, femme fatale, and a "Blueprint of Murder" all adds up to a bigger plot then first expected.

It's a story of the life of a man who advocated the necessity of sex education to children, which was unusual at the time, solely opposed to the amendment of the Peace Preservation Law, and was assassinated by a rightist prior to his opposition speech.

A skilled country doctor's talents are such that he can even perform operations as difficult and novel as removing a patient's kidney for the first time in Japan. Unfortunately for him, however, his wife's addiction to gambling is of such a magnitude that he is down to selling his underwear to make money. The image sticks and he becomes known as the 'underwear doctor.' On the other hand, his successful surgery's patient is so grateful he himself wants to become a physician.

Tatsuya Nakadai plays a scheming low-level executive who plays labor against management and uses anyone he can to further his career in this moral drama. When things get too hot, he bails and goes to work for a prominent politician (Koreya Senda). Soon he has impregnated the daughter (Yoko Tsukasa) of his boss, but he figures marriage will solve his current problems. His happiness is short-lived when he is stalked by a union radical he once double-crossed who now seeks vengeance.

Japanese police detective Saburo Fujioka is suspected of corruption, demoted, and sent to the city of Kojin. Kojin is the scene of fierce fighting between rival gangs. Fujioka is assigned to investigate the death of the wife of gangster Tetsuo Maruyama of the Kozuka gang, probably at the hands of one of the Oka gang. During a gang gunfight, Maruyama is rescued by Detective Fujioka and the two become friends. But Maruyama insists on avenging his wife's murder, even if it means conflict with his new friend.

The final part of the trilogy. It is about a younger brother, Suekichi. He learned well the lessons that life taught his older brothers. Therefore, he does not think to study, but strives for material well-being alone. To make a career, he ruthlessly pushes his colleagues with his elbows. For him, the high ideals of trade union activists Jiro and Saburo are an example of old-fashioned thinking, naive behavior.
