도심에 북극광이 나타난 1999년 어느 날 밤. 존은 아버지의 무선 라디오를 만지다 1969년에 살고 있는 아버지 프랭크의 목소리를 듣는다. 존은 소방관이었던 프랭크가 화재 현장에서 사고로 죽기 전 미리 피할 수 있는 방법을 알리고 그의 죽음을 막는다. 다음 날 존은 잃었던 아버지를 되찾은 기쁨에 들뜨지만 자신이 3명만 살해하고 죽었어야 할 연쇄 살인범도 함께 살렸다는 사실을 깨닫는다.

사랑하는 아내, 안나를 잃은 존(마이클 키튼 분)은 어느날, 죽은 아내의 목소리가 라디오와 자동 응답기를 통해 들려오자 혼란에 빠진다. 이에 앞서 레이몬드라는 남자가 존을 찾아와 자신도 안나로부터 메시지를 들었다고 했지만 절대로 있을 수 없는 일이라고 생각하고 그를 돌려 보낸다. 그러나 존은 혹시나 하는 마음으로 레이몬드를 찾아가게 되는데 거기서 비슷한 처지의 사라(데보라 카라 웅거 분)를 만나고 그들은 죽은 이들과의 접촉을 이어나가게 된다. 그러다 레이몬드가 죽고 사라와 존은 우연찮게 새로운 사실을 발견하게 되는데 레이몬드를 방문했던 명단에 있는 사람들이 존의 모니터에 모습을 보이곤 죽음을 맞이하게 된다는 것이었다. 존의 모니터에 '가서 그들을 도와 주라'는 메시지가 나타난다. 그러자 존은 이렇게 계속되는 삶과 죽음의 갈림길에서 혼돈에 빠지게 되는데.

미술을 전공하는 대학생 벤은 여자친구와 헤어진 후, 불면증에 시달린다. 하지만 하루에 8시간, 인생의 3분의 1이 더 생겼다는 걸 깨달은 그는 잠 못 이루는 밤을 보내기 위해 동네 슈퍼마켓에서 야간 아르바이트를 시작한다. 그곳에는 근무시간의 지루함을 예술적(?)으로 견디어내는 각양각색의 사람들이 있다. 벤 역시 지루한 근무시간을 견디기 위해 시간을 멈추는 상상을 하게 된다. 멈춰진 시간 속에서 쇼핑중인 여자 손님들의 옷을 벗기고 나체를 스케치하는 환상에 빠져드는 벤. 그런 그에게 점차 동료인 샤론이 눈에 띄기 시작한다. 사랑을 되찾고 싶은 그의 소망은 과연 이루어질 수 있을까.

2006년 겨울 아침, 호수 위의 집에 살던 의사 케이트 포레스터(산드라 블록)는 시카고의 병원 생활을 위해 집을 떠나야 하는 것이 못내 아쉽다. 다음 세입자에게 자기 앞으로 오는 우편물을 챙겨달라는 것과 현관 앞의 강아지 발자국은 이사오기 전부터 있었다는 설명을 적어 우편함에 넣는다. 뒤 이어 호수 위의 집으로 오게 된 건축가 알렉스 와일러(키아누 리브스)는 케이트의 편지와는 달리 오랫동안 사람이 살지 않아 잡풀이 무성하고 강아지의 발자국이란 어디를 찾아봐도 보이지 않아 당황한다. 그러나 며칠 후, 페인트 칠을 하고 있을 때 집 잃은 강아지가 현관을 밟고 지나가 그 자리에 발자국이 남자 알렉스는 우편함으로 주고받은 편지를 통해 케이트가 2004년 자신과 2년이나 떨어진 시간에 있음을 알게 된다. 어느새 서로에게 특별한 감정을 느끼게 된 그들은 다른 시간의 차이를 극복해보기로 하는데...
