천애해각 : 영원한 사랑 (1996)

13세기 말, 스코틀랜드 왕이 후계자 없이 죽자 잉글랜드는 왕권을 요구하며 스코틀랜드에 포악한 정치의 그림자를 드리우기 시작한다. 윌리엄 월레스(멜 깁슨)는 폭정을 피하여 멀리 보내져 양육된다. 그가 성장하여 고향에 돌아왔을때 스코틀랜드는 여전히 잉글랜드의 군주 롱생크(패트릭 맥구한)의 핍박과 탄압에 시달리고 있었다. 그는 운명적인 사랑의 여인 머론(캐서린 맥코맥)을 만나 결혼하지만, 잉글랜드의 폭정에 머론은 잔인하게 처형된다. 월레스는 머론의 복수를 다짐하고, 하나 둘씩 모여드는 스코틀랜드 사람들을 모아 용맹과 투지로 무장한 저항군의 지도자가 되는데...

젊지만 근거지 없는 방랑자 '조 테일러'는 글래스고와 에딘버러 사이를 떠돌다가 '레스'와 그의 아내 '엘라' 소유의 바지선에서 직업을 구하게 된다. 어느 날 오후, 그들은 운하에 떠내려 온 벌거벗은 젊은 여자의 익사체를 발견하게 된다. '조'가 건져올린 시체를 두고 '타살'인지 '자살'인지 마을 사람들은 술렁이기 시작한다. 경찰의 수사가 진행되면서 타살 가능성이 제기되고, 유력한 용의자가 검거되는 과정에서 과거와 현재가 교차되며 살인에 얽힌 의문점들이 서서히 풀려나간다. 한편, 바지선이라는 폐쇄된 공간에서 시간이 흐를수록 서로의 묘한 매력에 끌리게 되는 '조'와 '엘라'. 급기야 남편의 눈을 피해 둘의 관계는 격정으로 치닫고 팽팽한 긴장감 속에 더욱 더 강렬해진다. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 '조'가 익사체로 떠오른 여인에 대해 뭔가 많은것을 알고 있다는 것이 밝혀지면서 이야기는 예상치 못한 방향으로 흘러가기 시작한다.

해니(로버트 도나트 분)는 캐나다에서 업무차 런던에 온다. 어느날 쇼구경을 갔다가 아나벨라(루시 맨하임 분)라는 묘령의 여인을 만난다. 이 여인은 해니를 따라 아파트까지 와서는 자신이 스파이이며 지금 쫓기고 있다고 말한다. 또한 스파이들이 영국 공군의 기밀을 외국에 넘기려 하고 있으며 자신이 그것을 막아야 한다고 한다. 그녀는 '39 계단'이라는 알 수 없는 암호를 이야기한다. 그러나 그날밤 아나벨라는 살해된다. 해니는 아나벨라가 얘기한 사람을 만나기 위해 스코틀랜드로 떠난다. 기차 안에서 해니는 자신이 아나벨라의 살인범으로 몰리고 있음을 발견한다. 또한 아나벨라를 살해한 스파이들에게도 쫓겨 해니는 파멜라(마델레인느 캐롤린 분)에게 도움을 청하나 거절당한다. 겨우 기차에서 탈출한 해니는 스코틀랜드의 어느 농가에서 하룻밤을 지내고 그 농가 아낙의 도움으로 다시 경찰의 추적에서 벗어난다. 구사일생으로 교수(고드프리 터얼 분)의 집에 도착한 해니는 교수가 스파이 두목이라는 것을 안다. 교수의 집에서도 탈출한 해니는 경찰에 가서 사실을 말하지만 아무도 믿어주지 않는다. 다시 경찰서에서 도망치게 되고 결국엔 파멜라의 신고로 경찰로 위장한 스파이들에게 잡히고 만다. 파멜라가 위험하다고 느낀 스파이들은 파멜라와 해니를 수갑으로 묶어 두지만 해니는 또다시 탈출한다. 결국 파멜라도 해니의 말을 믿게 되고 스파이 두목인 교수가 39계단에게 경고를 하려하며 런던 극장에서 기밀을 넘겨받아 국외로 탈출하려한다는 사실을 알게 된다. 파멜라는 런던 경시청에 가서 사실을 알리나 이들 또한 믿지 않는다. 런던 극장으로 간 해니는 뛰어난 기억력을 자랑하는 '미스터 메모리'라는 사람이 바로 기밀을 두뇌에 저장한 사람이며 이 자를 데리고 가려 한다는 것을 알게 된다.

어네스트 고든의 자전적인 이야기를 담은 동명의 책을 영화화한 작품으로 세계2차대전 당시 일본군에게 잡혀 포로수용소에 갇혔지만, 희망을 버리지 않은 이들의 이야기를 그린 영화.

This is a very theatrical version, full of sound & fury, histrionics and big arm movements. Cynical audiences might not buy into it, but if you were to go back to the early 1600s this is probably the way you'd see it. The plot of Macbeth, if you were snoozing during high school English class, is about an 11th century Scottish warrior who hatches a dubious plan to steal the throne. Spurred on by his wife Lady Macbeth, who wears the pants in the household, he finds himself swiftly slipping down the path of evil.

When Scottish young gentleman David Balfour's father dies, he leaves school to collect his inheritance from uncle Ebenezer, who in turn sells the boy as a future slave to a pirate ship. When staunch Stuart dynasty supporter Alan Breck Stewart accidentally boards the ship, he takes David along on his escape back to Edinburgh. They part and meet again repeatedly, mutually helpful against the Redcoats and respectful, although David is loyal to the English crown, but learns about its cruel oppression. Major Jim "Lance" Lansing, an American ex-pilot of the U.S. Air Corps, returns to Scotland after the war and finds much trouble in the glen where he settles because of the high-handed activities of the local laird, Sandy Mengues, a wealthy South American who, with his daughter Marissa, has returned to the land of his forefathers. Led by Lansing, the people eventually prevail upon Mengues to restore peace to the glen, but not before a brief and unconvincing fight between Lansing and Dukes, the Mengues foreman.
